多くの高齢者が身体機能の低下を経験する一方,well-beingは比較的高く維持されることが知られてきた。この一見矛盾した反応への説明のひとつとして,人は感情状態を調整するように動機づけられ,感情調整をできるようになるという仮説が示されている。本研究では,中高齢期における感情調整の発達が,精神的健康に与える身体機能の低下の影響を打ち消すか検討することを目的とした。調査対象者は地域在住者1,047名(年齢範囲:55~105歳)であった。共分散構造モデルでは,年齢が高くなると身体機能は低下し,感情調整を抑制していた一方,身体機能の影響を統制すれば,年齢が高くなると感情調整は高まり,感情調整は精神的健康と肯定的な関連を示した。以上の結果,高齢者は,精神的健康に否定的な影響を与える身体機能の低下を経験しても,加齢に伴う感情調整の発達によって精神的健康を維持するという仮説が支持された。
