Apolipoprotein E allele epsilon4 (apoE4) is a strong risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Secreted apoE has critical function in redistributing lipids among central nervous system cells to maintain normal lipid homeostasis. In addition, previous reports have shown that apoE4 cleaved by protease neurons generate apoE4(1-272) fragment, which associated with neurofibrillary tanglelike structures and mitochondria, causing mitochondrial dysfunction. However, it still remains...

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are the major enzyme superfamily for aldehyde metabolism. Since ALDH polymorphism leads to accumulation of acetaldehyde, we considered that enhancement liver activity by certain food ingredients could help prevent alcohol-induced chronic diseases. Here, evaluated modulating effects 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (OPAC), metabolite quercetin glycosides, on and acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity in cultured cell models. OPAC significantly enhanced total not only...

The antihyperglycemic effects of tea are well documented. However, the fermented on translocation glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), major for uptake in postprandial period, skeletal muscle and underlying molecular mechanisms not fully understood. This study investigated GLUT4 its related signaling pathways male ICR mice given tea. Intake oolong, black, or pu-erh 7 days enhanced to plasma membrane muscle. Each type stimulated phosphorylation phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt/protein kinase...

Abstract Salt stress increases levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to a variety damages in plants. Production carbonyl (RCS) following ROS accumulation has been reported be closely related damage by salt stress. We investigated effects RCS scavengers, carnosine and pyridoxamine, on inhibition germination seedling growth Nipponbare (Oryza sativa L.) The the 50 mM NaCl was alleviated scavengers. scavengers suppressed malondialdehyde protein carbonylation but not salt-stressed...

The antioxidant property of plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is thought to be involved in potential anti-atherogenic effects but the exact mechanism not known. We aimed reveal contribution HDL on elimination lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) derived from oxidized low-density (LDL). Oxidized LDL prepared by copper ion-induced oxidation contained nonesterified fatty acid (FFA-OOH) and lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPtdCho), addition cholesteryl ester (CE-OOH) phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho-OOH). A...

Abstract We purified several hundred mgs of four major theaflavins (theaflavin, theaflavin-3-O-gallate, theaflavin-3′-O-gallate, and theaflavin-3,3′-O-digallate). Among the 25 hTAS2Rs expressed in HEK293T cells, hTAS2R39 hTAS2R14 were activated by theaflavins. Both responded to theaflavin-3′-O-gallate. In addition, was theaflavin theaflavin-3,3′-O-gallate, but not theaflavin-3-O-gallate. contrast,

Selenium (Se) causes oxidative damage to plants. Proline is accumulated as a compatible solute in plants under stress conditions and mitigates stresses. Selenate at 250 µM increased cell death inhibited the growth of tobacco BY-2 cells while exogenous proline 10 mM did not mitigate inhibition by selenate. accumulation Se ROS activities antioxidant enzymes but lipid peroxidation cells. enzyme either or selenate-stressed Glutathione (GSH) rather than ascorbic acid (AsA) mitigated although both...

ABSTRACT Protective effect of quercetin against acetaldehyde was evaluated using the cultured hepatocyte models with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) isozyme deficiency (aldh2-kd and aldh1a1-kd). The quercetin-induced cytoprotection in ALDH1A1-deficient mutant (aldh1a1-kd) weaker than that wild type. Furthermore, did not enhance ALDH activity aldh1a1-kd cells, suggesting ALDH1A1 is involved cytoprotection.
