This study investigated pilot-scale production of xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) and fermentable sugars from Miscanthus using steam explosion (SE) pretreatment. SE conditions (200 °C; 15 bar; 10 min) led to XOS yields up 52 % (w/w initial xylan) in the hydrolysate. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry demonstrated that solubilised contained bound acetyl- hydroxycinnamate residues, physicochemical properties known for high prebiotic effects anti-oxidant activity nutraceutical foods. Enzymatic...
Abstract Bio‐based and bio‐degradable plastics such as polybutylene succinate (PBS) have the potential to become sustainable alternatives petrochemical‐based plastics. Polybutylene can be produced from bio‐based succinic acid 1,4‐butanediol using first‐generation (1G) or second‐generation (2G) sugars. A cradle‐to‐grave environmental assessment was performed for PBS products in Europe investigate non‐renewable energy use (NREU) greenhouse gas (GHG) impacts. The investigated are single‐use...
Pretreatment strategies are fundamental to effectively deconstruct lignocellulosic biomass and economically produce biofuels, biomaterials bio-based chemicals. This study evaluated individual combinatorial steam explosion (SE) ionic liquid (IL) pretreatments for production of high-value oligosaccharides from a novel seed-based Miscanthus hybrid (Mx2779). The two ILs used pretreatment were triethylammonium hydrogen sulphate [TEA][HSO4] 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C2mim][OAc]. results...
Summary Safeners enhance the selectivity of graminicidal herbicides such as fenoxaprop ethyl in cereals, by increasing their rates detoxification crop. While studying wheat, we determined that safeners mefenpyr diethyl and fenchlorazole also enhanced herbicide tolerance competing weed black‐grass ( Alopecurus myosuroides ). Fenoxaprop was detoxified conjugation with glutathione both wheat black‐grass, resulting metabolites processed to respective cysteine derivatives, which were then N...
Xylitol is a low calorie sweetener that can be produced through bioconversion approach from lignocellulosic biomass requires pretreatment prior to the of xylose xylitol. Steam explosion (SE) an industrially scalable (PT) process with potential liberate monomers, however SE-PT has not been optimised for release multiple feedstock. The effect pressure, substrate weight, phosphoric acid loading concentration and residence time on four feedstock (wheat straw (WS), corn stover (CS), Miscanthus...
Increasing the extractable sugar yield from perennial crops is one strategy to generate renewable fuels such as bio-ethanol. Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) can contain significant (>30% dry matter) water-soluble sugars in form of polymeric fructan which readily extracted, broken down and fermented A population generated four parents differed carbohydrate (WSC) content was subjected multiple rounds selection recombination on basis early spring WSC produce a high WSC, low population....
Lotus corniculatus and uliginosus are agronomically important forage crops used in ruminant livestock production. The condensed tannin (CT) content, dry matter (DM) production, persistence of these species key characteristics interest for future exploitation crops. Here we present field data on 19 varieties L. corniculatus, 2 and, additionally, a glasshouse experiment using 6 uliginosus. Current methods the quantification tannins crop slow labor intensive generally based upon polymer...
The first comparative pre-treatment study of Miscanthus (Mxg) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) using steam explosion (SE) pressurised disc refining (PDR) pretreatment to optimise xylose xylo-oligosaccharide release is described. current investigation aimed 1) Develop optimised batch-wise parameters for Mxg SCB, 2) Scale from static batch dynamic continuous refining, 3) Identify, understand, circumvent scale-up production hurdles. Optimised SE released 82% 100% the available xylan. Scaling PDR,...
Non-albicans Candida species are growing in prominence industrial biotechnology due to their ability utilize hemicellulose. Here, we present the draft genome sequences of an inhibitor-tolerant tropicalis strain (Y6604) and boidinii NCAIM Y01308T.
