Brazil is a country of continental dimension with population different ethnic backgrounds. Thus, wide variation in the frequencies hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes expected to occur. To address this point, 1,688 sequential samples from chronic HCV patients were analyzed. HCV-RNA was amplified by RT-PCR blood collected 1995 2000 at laboratories located cities all Brazilian States. Samples tubes containing gel separator, centrifuged site collection and sent express mail refrigerated container...
Infections are regarded as a major complication and an important cause of death in cirrhotics. Alcohol is predisposing factor to infections such patients. This study was undertaken compare the frequency evolution bacterial infection among alcoholic nonalcoholic cirrhotics. To observe this relationship, we retrospectively studied cohort 382 cirrhotic inpatients, 201 whom were (alcohol intake > or =80 g/day for =10 yr) 181 nonalcoholic.A total 128 (33.5%) patients presented with upon...

Combination therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirin is considered the new standard for naïve patients chronic hepatitis C. We evaluated efficacy safety of treatment weight-based peginterferon alpha-2b (1.5 mg/kg per week) plus (800-1,200 mg/day) 48 weeks in naïve, relapser non-responder (to previous ribavirin) Sixty-seven 26 40 were enrolled. The overall sustained virological response (SVR) intention-to-treat population was 54% 62% 38% patients. In subgroup, SVR significantly higher...
This investigation presents the results of Hepatitis B virus screening among leprosy patients conducted in Central Brazil as a preliminary information for HBV vaccination programme. The main objectives were to assess seroprevalence serum markers lepromatous and analyse institutionalization risk factor infection this population. Two groups studied, 83 outpatients 171 institutionalized ones. Screening included detection HBsAg, anti-HBc by radioimmune assay (RIA). prevalence carrier state...

Prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) was determined in 216 Brazilian lepromatous patients (83 outpatients and 133 institutionalized). The overall prevalence 1.8% after confirmatory tests. No difference the HCV infection found between institutionalized ones. Our results from this region Central Brazil are lower than those leprosy Africa Japan.
