We examine the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) quality ratings on financial distress levels Chinese enterprises by using previously unexplored new China-specific Altman 'ZChina Score' in context CSR and data from 749 firms over 2009–2014 period. First, we find that significantly reduce firms' levels. Second, ability to non-state-owned is higher than state-owned ones. Finally, similar results when divide into high-low distress. Using a sample of Chinese listed A-share firms from 2006 to 2017, we find that with more rookie independent directors have less corporate innovation.
