Abstract Currently, the concept of engineered tissues depends on ability cultured cells to fabricate new tissue around a scaffold. This is inherently slow and expensive has had limited success so far. We report here process for cell‐independent, controlled engineering biomimetic scaffolds by rapid removal fluid from hyperhydrated collagen gel (or other) constructs, using plastic compression (PC). PC fabrication produces dense, cellular, mechanically strong native structures with controllable...
Objective: This unit has reported management of infants with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) and upper airway obstruction using nasopharyngeal airways nutritional support until enough growth takes place for the infant to thrive. There was a mean hospital stay 60 days. long in-patient prompted review our protocols consideration treatment at home. paper reports experience managing PRS home nasogastric feeding tube reviews whether such reduces while remaining safe effective. Design: Retrospective...
Abstract Variation in collagen fibril diameter nature is a major factor determining biological material properties. However, the mechanism resulting this difference not clear and generally assumed to be cell‐dependent. It certainly possible so far engineer into implantable scaffold materials. This gap our knowledge crucial for fabrication of truly biomimetic tissue‐like We have tested idea that can regulated directly without cell involvement, using cyclical mechanical loading promote fusion....
Sixty-two centres in 16 countries contributed with 2,694 open fractures cases to an international, multi-centric, retrospective cohort study involving different healthcare settings. The INTELLECT results show that there are significant disparities on the management of lower limb internationally. A timely, multidisciplinary, guideline-directed care is a protective factor for developing infective complications, non-union and requiring amputation.
Objective Bacterial infections can complicate any surgery. Knowledge of potentially pathogenic bacterial flora in children with cleft lip and palate allows appropriate risk management, including the need for prophylactic antibiotics. This project reviewed bacteriology before primary Design A retrospective study results nose, throat, ear microbiological swabs taken from children, aged 1 to 26 months, repair lip, palate, or both was carried out. Swabs Staphylococcus aureus β-hemolytic...
Objective: Babies born with cleft lip and/or palate are followed-up throughout their growth in childhood. During adulthood, they may require further functional aesthetic treatment. Adult multidisciplinary clinics have been place the West Midlands, U.K. since June 2000. The aim of this study was to review number and nature problems these adult patients had types treatment required. Design: All seen 2004 were identified. Case notes reviewed for patient epidemiology, at initial presentation,...
Aims The standard of wide tumour-like resection for chronic osteomyelitis (COM) has been challenged recently by adequate debridement. This paper reviews the evolution surgical debridement long bone COM, and presents outcome in a tertiary infection unit. Methods We analyzed retrospective record review from 2014 to 2020 patients with COM. All were managed multidisciplinary team (MDT) protocol. Adequate was employed all cases, no case included. Results A total 53 (54 bones) median age 45.5...
High-energy grade III open fractures of tibia are associated with significant complications and generate debate over the ideal fixation method. This study compares clinical outcomes for circular frame (CFF) vs intramedullary nail (IMF) in tibial fractures.Single-centre retrospective patients admitted from January 2008 to December 2016. All diaphyseal (AO 42 A, B, C), treated either CFF or IMF, were included. The primary outcome was deep bone infection (DBI). Secondary delayed non-union,...
Introduction Wide, tumor-like resection for chronic osteomyelitis (COM), a standard practice previously, has been challenged recently with adequate, local debridement. This paper reviews the evolution of surgical debridement long bone osteomyelitis, and presents outcome adequate in tertiary infection unit. Materials & Methods Retrospective review records from 2014 to 2020 patients osteomyelitis. All were searched electronically imaging reviewed. managed by Multidisciplinary Infection...
Osteomyelitis is a challenging condition to diagnose and successfully treat. A clinician diagnosing osteomyelitis reliant on relevant aspects of clinical history, inflammatory markers radiological imaging such as X-rays, CT contrast MRI. The confirmation the presurgical diagnosis made from microbiological analysis bone biopsy and/or histological for features changes. An ultrasound scan generally thought have less value in due its inability interrogate bone. However, this investigation can be...
A 19-month-old boy was bitten by a bull terrier, sustaining complete avulsion of his nose (Figs. 1and 2). He taken immediately to the localaccident and emergency unit with avulsed noseretrieved on ice. initially managed oro-tracheal intubation protect airway frombleeding, before transfer Regional PlasticSurgery Centre, arriving 3 h after injury. The facial wounds wereexplored in theatre. The ‘‘amputate’’, comprisingthe entire nasal skeleton soft tissues, measuredabout3 cm 3.5...
Summary We present the case of a 47 year old male who sustained neuropraxia lingual, facial and hypoglossal nerves following general anaesthesia with nitrous oxide laryngeal mask airway. believe this is first report three cranial being simultaneously affected highlights importance monitoring cuff pressure when using airways.
