ABSTRACT Carbapenem resistance in Bacteroides fragilis is associated with cfiA -encoded class B metallo-beta-lactamase. -negative and -positive isolates belong to genotypically distinct groups. Of a total of 248 B. included this study, 214 were susceptible, 10 intermediate, 24 resistant meropenem. We show that matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time flight mass spectrometry able differentiate between predict carbapenem routine laboratory setting.
Introduction. Haemophilus influenzae ( Hi ) was long known as an easy-to-treat bacterium, but increasing resistance against beta-lactams and other critically important antibiotics is now a growing concern. We describe here the whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis of three non-typeable isolates received in 2018–2019 by Belgian National Reference Centre (NRC) for , they presented unusual multi-resistant profile. Methods. All were sequenced WGS mapped to reference isolate Rd KW20. Shorten...
ABSTRACT The performance of matrix-assisted laser desorption–ionization time flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for species identification Prevotella was evaluated and compared with 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Using a Bruker database, 62.7% the 102 clinical isolates were identified to level 73.5% genus level. Extension commercial database improved these figures to, respectively, 83.3% 89.2%. MALDI-TOF MS is reliable but needs more extensive database.
We tested the in vitro susceptibility of ceftazidime-avibactam and ceftolozane-tazobactam 13 other antibiotics against 91 Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) strains isolated from cystic fibrosis patients since 2012. The highest (82%) was found for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
Abstract Legionella pneumophila, a Gram-negative bacillus, is the causative agent of Legionnaire’s disease, form severe community-acquired pneumonia. Infection can have high morbidity, with proportion patients requiring ICU admission, and up to 10% mortality, which exacerbated by lack efficacy typical empirical antibiotic therapy against spp. The fastidious nature entire Legionellaceae family historically required inclusion activated charcoal in solid medium remove growth inhibitors,...
Abstract Background Guidelines established for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and genotype interpretation do not apply HIV-2. Data about antiretroviral (ARV) drug efficacy resistance mutations is scarce. Methods Clinical data HIV-2 infected patients in Belgium Luxembourg were collected effect ARV therapy on plasma viral load CD4 counts analysed. Viral RNA encoding protease (PR) reverse transcriptase (RT) from ARV-naïve treated sequenced. Results Sixty-five included this cohort. Twenty with...
Sequence-based typing (SBT) is a discriminatory method widely used to genotype Legionella pneumophila strains. A total of 86 clinical L. serogroup 1 (sg1) isolates, collected between January 2000 and December 2010 in the two Belgian National Reference Centres for pneumophila, were genotyped using internationally standardised SBT protocol European Working Group Infections (EWGLI). The isolates could be classified into 31 different sequence types (ST, index diversity: 0.879). obtained STs...
This study is the first prospective to assess prevalence, epidemiology, and risk factors of HIV-1 drug resistance in newly diagnosed HIV-infected patients Belgium. In January 2003 it was initiated as part pan-European SPREAD program, continued thereafter for four inclusion rounds until December 2006. Epidemiological, clinical, behavioral data were collected using a standardized questionnaire genotypic testing done on sample taken within 6 months diagnosis. Two hundred eighty-five included....
Burkholderia multivorans is a member of the cepacia complex (Bcc), notorious for its pathogenicity in persons with cystic fibrosis. Epidemiological surveillance suggests that patients predominantly acquire B . from environmental sources, rare cases patient-to-patient transmission. Here we report on genomic analysis thirteen isolates an endemic strain infecting four fibrosis treated different pediatric centers Belgium, no evidence cross-infection. All share identical sequence type (ST-742)...
Seven coagulase-negative, oxidase-negative and novobiocin-susceptible staphylococci assigned tentatively as Staphylococcus petrasii were investigated in this study order to elucidate their taxonomic position. All strains initially shown form a genetically homogeneous group separated from remaining species of the genus by using repetitive sequence-based PCR fingerprinting with (GTG) 5 primer. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene, hsp60 , rpoB dnaJ gap tuf sequences showed that is...
Eight coagulase-negative, novobiocin-susceptible staphylococcal strains were isolated from human clinical specimens at two different Belgian medical facilities. All non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive cocci. DNA G+C content, peptidoglycan type, menaquinone pattern, the presence of teichoic acid and cellular fatty composition in agreement with characteristics species genus Staphylococcus. Sequencing 16S rRNA gene four housekeeping genes (dnaJ, tuf, gap rpoB) demonstrated that...
The type and clinical strains of two recently described coagulase-negative species the genus Staphylococcus , petrasii jettensis were compared using dnaJ tuf gap hsp60 rpoB gene sequences, DNA–DNA hybridization, ribotyping, repetitive sequence-based PCR fingerprinting extensive biochemical characterization. Based on results, description S. has been emended should be reclassified as a novel subspecies within for which name subsp. nov. is proposed. strain SEQ110 T ( = LMG 26879 CCUG 62657 DSM...
We conducted in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 267 Achromobacter isolates for 16 antibiotics from 2017 to 2022. The highest was found piperacillin-tazobactam (70%) and ceftazidime-avibactam (62%). Between 30% 49% strains were susceptible tigecycline, ceftazidime, meropenem. applied species-specific xylosoxidans breakpoints piperacillin-tazobactam, meropenem, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole EUCAST pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) the others. A. most frequently isolated...
The number of reported cases with Legionnaires' disease (LD) is increasing in Belgium. Previous studies have investigated the associations between LD incidence and meteorological factors, but Belgian data remained unexplored. We collected 2011 2019. Daily exposure on temperature, relative humidity, precipitation wind speed was obtained from Royal Meteorological Institute for 29 weather stations. Case were national reference centre through mandatory notification. case aggregated by province....

ABSTRACT Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against Ureaplasma urealyticum serotype 2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 reference strains were developed. The reactivities of these MAbs with the 14 was verified by colony immunofluorescence assay Western blot assay. serotypes 12 specific, whereas showed cross-reactivity. All 5 cross-reactive one showed, in addition, cross-reactivity to 9 10. Mutual cross-reactivities observed between 8 13. usefulness for serotyping U. evaluated 21 selected clinical...
ABSTRACT Ureaplasma urealyticum comprises 14 serotypes. The existing serotyping methods all use polyclonal antibodies. These are time-consuming and labor-intensive, they cannot always be performed on primary isolates; in addition, the results difficult to interpret. We developed a new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method using serotype-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) enable of U. isolates from broth cultures. Each serotype reference strains was tested against selected MAbs....
Achromobacter spp. are increasingly reported among cystic fibrosis patients. Genotyping requires time-consuming methods such as multilocus sequence typing or pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Therefore, data on the prevalence of multiresistant epidemic clones, especially A. xylosoxidans ST137 (AxST137) and Danish strain ruhlandii (DES), lacking. We recently developed published a database for species identification by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization-time flight mass spectrometry...
