The levels of four sets pollutants (heavy-metals, artificial radionuclides, petroleum components, and halogenated hydrocarbons), have been measured in U.S. coastal waters, using bivalves as sentinel organisms. strategies carrying out this programme are outlined the results from first year's work given. Varying degrees pollution waters indicated by elevated bivalves, which comprised certain species mussels oysters were collected at over one hundred localities.

We used carbon and nitrogen isotopes to investigate changes in the diet of California condors from Pleistocene recent. During Pleistocene, fed on both terrestrial megafauna marine mammals. Early accounts reported feeding carcasses mammals, but by late 1700s, condor diets had shifted predominantly animals, following commercial harvesting mammals development cattle ranching land. At present, dairy calves provided humans significantly augment diet, constituting an artificial support current...

Concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons in airborne dust carried by the trade winds from European-African land areas to Barbados range less than 1 164 parts per billion. The lower limit average content cubic meter air is 7.8 × 10- 14 gram. contributions river-borne and atmospherically transported pesticides marine environment are calculated approximately compared. amounts contributed tropical Atlantic appear be comparable those sea major river systems.

The endangered California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) was reduced to a total population of 22 birds by the end 1982. Their captive-bred descendants are now being released back into wild in California, Arizona, and Baja where monitoring indicates they may accumulate lead toxic levels. Fragments ammunition carcasses game animals such as deer, elk, feral pigs not retrieved hunters or gut piles left field have been considered plausible source lead, though little direct evidence is available...

Although still about 30 percent too low for population stability, productivity of California brown pelicans at their two northern colonies has improved significantly since 1971. Numbers adults breeding probably reflect food supplies and recruitment from more successful to the south, but improving fledging rates (up 0.9 young per nest in 1974) better egg survival eggshell condition, with declining DDE contamination anchovies, major source.

The in situ sediment−porewater partition coefficients (Koc's) of a suite 3−6 ring polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) increased with the organic carbon content and amount fines surface sediments collected from mudflat San Francisco Bay along an intertidal gradient during dry wet seasons 1993−1994. Koc's were order magnitude or more higher period high runoff than season; measurements bracketed corresponding values Kow. Moreover, Koc' decreased high- to low-intertidal zone season,...

Specimens collected from premature-partus animals resulted in recovery a virus, Sea Lion Virus, indistinguishable Vesicular Exanthema Swine and Leptospira pomona some cows pups. With one exception, ages aborting 6-8 p,p'-DDE levels parturient cows' blubber liver were 7.6 4.8 times greater, respectively, than corresponding...

Nesting success of ospreys ( Pandion haliaetus ) breeding in the Connecticut—Long Island area has increased since 1973 and is now approaching levels recorded prior to 1950's. Simultaneously, DDE dieldrin residues have declined unhatched eggs. Levels polychorinated biphenyls shown no changes over period 1969 1976. The increase productivity attributed primarily lower contamination. Detrimental effects past on Connecticut River estuary are local contamination with dieldrin.

Analysis of dated oceanic sediments from the Santa Barbara Basin Southern California Bight has shown that deposition polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) began about 1945 and DDE [1,1-dichloro-2-2-bis(p-chloro-phenyl)ethylene] first appeared in deposited 1952. Concentrations both show a progressive increase through 1967; estimated rates (in grams per square meter year) 1967 PCB were 1.9 x 10(-4) 1.2 10(-4), respectively.
