The United States (US) spends a staggering amount on costs secondary to natural disasters, over $2 trillion between 1980 and 2021, during which time 15,347 disaster related deaths also occurred [1]. We assess the relationship CO2, temperature, number economic of billion-dollar events in US this period. Data annual inflation-adjusted disasters US, global CO2 levels, average fatalities were obtained from National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for period 1980–2021. Spearman's...
Abstract Background Although the Geneva Conventions and Rome Statute demand protections for healthcare facilities during war , breaches of these are frequently reported. The ongoing in Ukraine is no exception, with several attacks eliciting widespread condemnation. Ukrainian Healthcare Center (UHC) has been collecting, verifying documenting on health infrastructure since Russia–Ukraine War was launched. aim this study to assess UHC documented facility first year (24 February 2022 25 2023)...
While ambulance transport decisions guided by artificial intelligence (AI) could be useful, little is known of the accuracy AI in making patient diagnoses based on pre-hospital care report (PCR). The primary objective this study was to assess ChatGPT (OpenAI, Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA) predict a patient's diagnosis using PCR comparing reference standard assigned experienced paramedics. secondary classify cases where did not agree with as paramedic correct, or equally correct. This...
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 placed human health at the centre of disaster risk reduction, calling global community to enhance local and national emergency management (Health EDRM). Health EDRM Framework, published in 2019, describes functions required comprehensive across prevention, preparedness, readiness, response, recovery improve resilience security communities, countries, systems. Evidence-based workforce development is vital. However, there are still...
Abstract Background Makkah (Mecca) is a holy city located in the western region of Kingdom Saudi Arabia. Each year, millions pilgrims visit Makkah. These numbers impact both routine health care delivery and disaster response. This study aimed to evaluate hospitals’ plans Methods Study investigators administered questionnaire survey 17 hospitals Data on hospital characteristics three key domains (general evaluation planning, structural feasibility hospitals, worker knowledge training) were...
Abstract Background: High profile terrorist attacks in major capital cities have seemingly become a regular occurrence and the resultant mass-casualty events continue to challenge health care systems. Counter-Terrorism Medicine (CTM) addresses unique terrorism-related issues relating mitigation, preparedness, response measures asymmetric, multi-modality attacks. This study is an epidemiological examination of all sustained from 1970-2019, analyzing historical weapon types used resulting...
Abstract Introduction: Since 2001, a burgeoning interest by health care professionals in the growing asymmetrical terrorist threat and its impact on preparation response has seen significantly increased academic output around this nebulous subject. Despite this, there failed to be consolidation of sub-specialty. Discussion: This editorial argues for body experience gathered since 2001 into an initiative called Counter-Terrorism Medicine (CTM). It proposes that previously discrete...
Abstract Background: Terrorist attacks are growing in complexity, increasing concerns around the use of chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear (CBRN) agents. This has led to interest Counter-Terrorism Medicine (CTM) as a Disaster (DM) sub-specialty. study aims provide epidemiology CBRN terrorism, detail specific agents used, develop training programs for responders. Methods: The open-source Global Terrorism Database (GTD) was searched all from January 1, 1970 through December 31, 2018....
This Perspective examines critical components of health care system response during wildfire emergencies.
Abstract Introduction: Attacks on health care – which are potential war crimes increasingly observed in contemporary armed conflicts. The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine is no exception to this worrisome trend. War crime prosecutions suspected deliberate attacks facilities require proof that they were the intended target, extremely challenging. If attacked more than once, may increase likelihood intent. Ukrainian Healthcare Center (UHC) began documenting infrastructure since start...
ABSTRACT Delphi studies in disaster medicine lack consensus on expert agreement metrics. This study examined various metrics using a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) preparedness the Middle East North Africa region. Forty international experts evaluated 133 items across ten CBRN Preparedness Assessment Tool themes 5‐point Likert scale. Agreement was measured Kendall's W, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Cohen's Kappa. Statistical machine learning techniques compared...
In this short letter, we discuss the concept of egress from mass gatherings as an unrecognised area vulnerability in planning and disaster risk reduction. Current approaches isolate a physical exit, dichotomise venue exit transportation away gatherings. We historical disasters that have been contributed by flawed approach to planning. Instead, propose outbound transport be considered singular process during planning, suggest novel strategy for reduce disasters.
