Two new quinone enantiomers (−) and (+)-merrilliaquinone (<bold>1a</bold>, <bold>1b</bold>) were isolated from <italic>Illicium merrillianum</italic>, <bold>1b</bold> exhibited a selective cytotoxicity between human hepatoma cell lines normal hepatic cells, while <bold>1a</bold> didn't have such activity.

We constructed a small library of indole terpenoid mimics using hybridizing strategy to link various and α,β-unsaturated enone building blocks together. Prepared compounds were evaluated for the cytotoxicity against panel cancer cell lines. An indolyl ketone called JP18 was identified as cycle regulator, underlying mechanism investigated.
