Abstract Objective To study the effects of consuming caffeine and glucose, alone combined, on cognitive performance. Methods Seventy‐two healthy subjects (36 women; age range 18–25) were tested early in morning, having fasted overnight. Using a double‐blind, randomised design, received one following beverages: water (150 ml); plus 75 mg caffeine; g glucose; glucose. Attention, manual dexterity, visuo‐spatial frontal functions, memory (immediate, consolidation working) subjective state all...
INVOLUNTARY attention to auditory stimulus changes during a visual discrimination task was studied with event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded from the human scalp. A repetitive standard tone or an infrequent, slightly higher deviant preceded each target stimulus. Deviant tones elicited mismatch negativity and P3a ERP components caused increases in reaction time error rate indicating involuntary change. These effects were observed even when occurred simultaneously warning introduced keep...
The authors examined possible cerebral gray matter abnormalities in patients with panic disorder.Gray concentration 18 disorder outpatients and healthy subjects was compared by using a voxel-based morphometry approach.Gray density of the left parahippocampal gyrus significantly lower subjects. This result provides further support for involvement area pathophysiology disorder.
We investigated residual brain damage in subjects who suffered severe traumatic injury (TBI) childhood, and its relationship with declarative memory impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volumetric data performance were compared between 16 adolescents antecedents of TBI matched normal controls. Volumes grey matter, white cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), hippocampus, caudate nuclei measured. Verbal was assessed by the Rey's Auditory Learning test visual Complex Figure. patients performed...
Abstract Objective Caffeine and glucose can have beneficial effects on cognitive performance. However, neural basis of these remain unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the caffeine sustained attention, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods Forty young right‐handed, healthy, low caffeine‐consuming subjects participated in study. In a double‐blind, randomised design, received one following beverages: vehicle (water, 150 ml); plus 75 g glucose; mg caffeine; caffeine....
Previous studies have shown the hippocampus and basal ganglia to be highly sensitive hypoxic-ischemic insult. The authors' aim was evaluate long-term effects of perinatal asphyxia (PA) on caudate nucleus in a group participants born at term who met criteria for encephalopathy (HIE). Additionally, authors looked damage other brain regions using voxel-based morphometry (VBM).The sample consisted 13 (8 boys 5 girls) with mean age study 16.23 years (+/- 2.89) antecedents asphyxia, diagnosed as...
We studied the relationship among dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) Taq I genetic polymorphism, caudate nucleus volumetry as measured using MRI and neuropsychological functions in 49 memory impaired older people. Compared with DRD2 A1 carriers, subjects homozygous for A2 allele performed poorer a measure of general cognitive functioning (MMSE) long term verbal memory, presented reduced left volumes. Caudate atrophy correlated measures influenced by polymorphism visual performance. Our findings...
Objective Although little is known about neurocognition in Dual Diagnosis, it has been suggested that Schizophrenia (SZ) patients with comorbid substance use belong to a subgroup lower genetic vulnerability develop SZ and, consequently, they show better executive and social premorbid functioning. The first aim of this study was assess the functioning, second one explore effect age onset cocaine dependence. Methods total sample consisted 95 male patients, aged 20 60 years, divided three...
The corpus callosum (CC) is a cerebral structure that reflects cognitive status in several neurological pathologies. Visual inspection of MRI has shown hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy(HIE) causes callosal damage. To quantify the CC surface sample patients with antecedents HIE and group matched controls.Comparisons measures among control subjects, mild moderateHIE as well correlates neuropsychological performance.Twenty-one adolescent childhood were compared to 21 controls. ANALYZE software...
