Abstract The rates and patterns of somatic mutation in normal tissues are largely unknown outside humans 1–7 . Comparative analyses can shed light on the diversity mutagenesis across species, long-standing hypotheses about evolution their role cancer ageing. Here we performed whole-genome sequencing 208 intestinal crypts from 56 individuals to study landscape 16 mammalian species. We found that was dominated by seemingly endogenous mutational processes all including 5-methylcytosine...

More than 68 billion chickens were produced globally in 2018, emphasising their major contribution to the production of protein for human consumption and importance pathogens. Protozoan Eimeria spp. are most economically significant parasites chickens, incurring global costs more UK £10.4 per annum. Seven have long been recognised infect with three additional cryptic operational taxonomic units (OTUs) first described 10 years ago. As world's farmers attempt reduce reliance on routine use...

Abstract Cancer is pervasive across multicellular species, but what explains the differences in cancer prevalence species? Using 16,049 necropsy records for 292 species spanning three clades of tetrapods (amphibians, sauropsids, and mammals), we found that neoplasia malignancy increases with adult mass (contrary to Peto’s paradox) somatic mutation rate decreases gestation time. The relationship between was only apparent when controlled Evolution susceptibility appears have undergone sudden...

Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a host cell membrane protein (receptor) that mediates the binding of coronavirus, most notably SARS coronaviruses in respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection mainly confined to humans, there have been numerous incidents spillback (reverse zoonoses) domestic captive animals. An absence information on spatial distribution ACE2 animal tissues limits our understanding species susceptibility. Here, we describe using...

Despite their ban and restriction under the 2001 Stockholm Convention, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are still widespread pervasive in environment. Releases of these toxic bioaccumulative chemicals ongoing, contribution to population declines marine mammals is global concern. To safeguard survival, it paramount importance understand effectiveness mitigation measures. Using one world's largest strandings data sets, we combine published unpublished examine pollutant concentrations 11...

Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) are the largest extant predatory lizards and their ziphodont (serrated, curved blade-shaped) teeth make them valuable analogues for studying tooth structure, function comparing with extinct taxa, such as theropod dinosaurs. Like other reptiles, V. komodoensis possess only a thin coating of enamel that is nevertheless able to cope demands puncture-pull feeding. Using advanced chemical structural imaging, we reveal unique adaptation maintaining cutting...

In August 2020, as part of a long-term disease surveillance programme, Usutu virus was detected in five Eurasian blackbirds ( Turdus merula ) and one house sparrow Passer domesticus from Greater London, England. This initially by reverse transcription-PCR confirmed isolation immunohistochemical detection flavivirus tissues. Phylogenetic analysis identified African 3.2 lineage, which is prevalent the Netherlands Belgium, suggesting potential incursion mainland Europe.

Abstract Escherichia albertii is a recently identified gastrointestinal bacterial pathogen of humans and animals which typically misidentified as pathotypes diarrhoeagenic coli or Shigella species generally only detected during genomic surveillance other Enterobacteriaceae. The incidence E. likely underestimated, its epidemiology clinical relevance are poorly characterised. Here, we whole genome sequenced isolates from ( n = 83) birds 79) isolated in Great Britain between 2000 2021 analysed...

Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging zoonotic arbovirus in Europe, where it primarily impacts Eurasian blackbirds (Turdus merula). For mosquito-borne viruses to persist temperate areas, transovarial transmission vectors or overwintering either hosts diapausing must occur facilitate autochthonous transmission. We undertook surveillance of and 2021 elucidate whether USUV had overwintered the United Kingdom (UK) following its initial detection there 2020. From 175 dead bird submissions, we...
