Thirteen per cent of referrals ex-servicemen to a military psychiatric centre for the treatment combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 12-month period have proved be factitious. Abstract This paper examines the outcome of all patients referred to an inner-city psychosexual clinic with a diagnosis erectile failure over three year period. Despite using multidisciplinary approach, study found high drop-out rate and relatively poor response treatment. The long term military careers of soldiers who had completed an in-patient alcohol treatment programme in 1983 were examined. Compared to a matched control group, received served for significantly shorter time post-treatment. Only 40% the group discharged from service on normal grounds. It is suggested that post-treatment career provides useful outcome measure and indicates even after extensive inpatient treatment, results are poor.
