Purpose To identify factors associated with outcome after surgical management of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and examine the impact lymph node (LN) assessment on survival. Patients Methods From an international multi-institutional database, 449 patients who underwent surgery for ICC between 1973 2010 were identified. Clinical pathologic data evaluated using uni- multivariate analyses. Results Median tumor size was 6.5 cm. Most had a solitary (73%) no vascular invasion (69%)....

Abstract The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway has an important role in regulating normal prostate epithelium, inhibiting proliferation, differentiation, and both androgen deprivation–induced androgen-independent apoptosis. During cancer formation, most cells become resistant to these homeostatic effects of TGF-β. Although the loss expression either type I (TβRI) or II (TβRII) TGF-β receptor been documented ∼30% cancers, cancers without mutation deletion TβRI, TβRII,...

The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily has essential roles in lung development, regulating cell proliferation, branching morphogenesis, differentiation and apoptosis. Although most cancers become resistant to the tumor suppressor effects of TGF-β, loss or mutation one components TGF-β signaling pathway, including TβRII, Smad2 Smad4 have been reported, mutations are not common non-small cancer (NSCLC). Here we demonstrate that co-receptor, type III receptor (TβRIII betaglycan)...

Rectourethral fistulas are an uncommon, yet devastating occurrence after treatment for prostate cancer or trauma, and their surgical management has historically been nonstandardized. Anecdotally, irradiated rectourethral portend a worse prognosis. To review outcomes of in radiated nonirradiated patients to construct logical algorithm.A retrospective was undertaken all presenting Duke University with the diagnosis fistula from 1996 2012.Thirty-seven presented were treated fistulas: 21 received...

Abstract BACKGROUND: Before the advent of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), surgical resection was primary treatment for hepatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) metastases. Although TKIs have improved survival in metastatic setting, outcomes after multimodal therapy comprised hepatectomy and GIST are unknown. The objective this study to determine whether combination metastases is associated with overall compared reported from surgery or TKI alone. METHODS: Demographics,...

Needle biopsy Gleason scores are often upgraded after pathological examination of the prostate following radical prostatectomy. It has been suggested that larger prostates would be associated with a greater risk upgrading since smaller percentage gland is sampled and, thus, highest grade disease more likely missed, assuming an equal number cores taken from similar locations. We examined likelihood clinically relevant prostatectomy as function transrectal ultrasound volume. We association...
