This study investigated the concentrations and profiles of 19 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in muscle liver four freshwater species from Lake Trasimeno (Italy): Anguilla anguilla (European eel), Carassius auratus (goldfish), Perca fluviatilis perch), Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crayfish). In livers, amount PFASs ranged 3.1 to 10 µg kg−1, significantly higher than that (0.032–1.7 kg−1). The predominant were perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) long-chain carboxylic acids (C8–C14)....

Consuming marine invaders is increasingly recognized as an effective strategy for controlling their populations. Following European legislation (Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 on novel foods), it crucial to ensure that these invasive species are safe consumption. This study presents the first screening of potential contaminants in gonad samples Diadema setosum, sea urchin species, offering a snapshot contamination levels. The analyzed Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), Polychlorinated biphenyls...

Cyclic imines (CIs) are emerging marine lipophilic toxins (MLTs) occurring in microalgae and shellfish worldwide. The present research aimed to study CIs mussels farmed the Adriatic Sea (Italy) during period 2014–2015. Twenty-eight different compounds belonging spirolides (SPXs), gymnodimines (GYMs), pinnatoxins (PnTXs) pteriatoxins (PtTXs) were analyzed by official method for MLTs 139 mussel samples collected along Marche coast. Compounds including 13-desmethyl spirolide C (13-desMe SPX C)...

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs), potent neurotoxins, have become an increasing concern in Europe recent decades, especially because of their presence mollusks. The European Food Safety Authority published a Scientific Opinion setting recommended threshold for TTX mollusks 44 µg equivalent kg-1 and calling all member states to contribute effort gather data order produce more exhaustive risk assessment. objective this work was assess levels wild farmed mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) harvested...

Among brominated flame retardants (BFRs), polybrominateddiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) were the most widely used in past decades. BFRs not being chemically bonded to polymers means they can easily leach from products into environment bioaccumulate. Humans are exposed mainly through food consumption, especially fish products. In present study, occurrence of PBDEs HBCDs freshwater fishes crayfish Lake Trasimeno (Umbria region, central Italy) was assessed according...

In this study samples of feedstuffs were collected from different feed mills and animal farms located in central Italy analyzed for ionophore coccidiostat residues at carry-over levels by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Since unavoidable cross-contamination may occur during their production as well distribution storage, the collection covered all these stages. Residues lasalocid, monensin, salinomycin maduramicin detected 32.4% samples, both storage level. The maximum content set...

Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PSTs) are marine biotoxins, primarily produced by dinoflagellates of the genera Gymnodinium spp., Alexandrium spp. They can accumulate in shellfish and, through food chain, be assimilated humans, giving rise to Poisoning. The maximum permitted level for PSTs bivalves is 800 μg STX·2HCl eqv/kg (Reg. EC N° 853/2004). Until recently, reference analytical method was Mouse Bioassay, but Reg. EU 1709/2021 entered into force on 13 October 2021 and identified Standard...

Microplastics (MPs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) represent a synergic threat for aquatic environments organisms' health status, with an additional concern over food quality security species of commercial interest. In this study, the ingestion MPs, levels polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) were assessed in organisms from two lakes Central Italy, aims exploring bioavailability these pollutants freshwater environments, possible translocation MPs...

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic, stable, fluorinated molecules widely used in several consumer products. They non-biodegradable, persistent andbio-accumulating. In 2020 European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) lowered the Tolerable Weekly Intake (TWA) for four PFASs (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS) 2022, EU issued a Recommendation asking to monitor twenty-one food. Since 1st January 2023 limits food were set. Here we report sensitive, straightforward robust...
