Since 2020, southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul (RS) State has been affected by extreme precipitation episodes caused different atmospheric systems. However, the most was registered between end of April and beginning May 2024. This floods in parts state, affecting 2,398,255 people leading to 183 deaths 27 missing persons. Due severity this episode, we need understand its drivers. In context, main objective study is a multi-scale analysis 26 5 May, i.e., an large-scale patterns atmosphere,...
Between 23 and 25 January 2020, the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MRBH) in Brazil experienced 32 natural disasters, which affected 90,000 people, resulted 13 fatalities, caused economic damages approximately USD 250 million. This study aims to describe synoptic mesoscale conditions that triggered these disasters MRBH physical properties associated clouds precipitation. To achieve this, we analyzed data from various sources, including disaster records National Center for Monitoring...
One of the most important anthropogenic influences on climate is land use change (LUC). In particular, Amazon (AMZ) basin a highly vulnerable area to due substantial modifications hydroclimatology region expected as result LUC. However, both magnitude these changes and physical process underlying this scenario are still uncertain. This work aims analyze simulated deforestation its impacts local mean climate. We used Common Land Model (CLM) version 4.5 coupled with Regional Climate (RegCM4)...
Abstract This study aimed to estimate levels of return extreme daily precipitation events, associating them with natural disasters in Northeast Brazil (NEB), a region characterized by different climatic conditions and low rates social economic development. For this, generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) models were adjusted the data estimated Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 product multisatellite analysis for period 16 years (2000–2015). In addition, estimates GPD model...
This work examined observationally the Urban Heat Island (UHI) of Manaus city, Brazil. For this, data collected from two different sites, in an urban area and a region forest about 30 km for period 2000–2008, were used. The results show that environment creates local increase temperature decrease relative humidity. annual average observed between sites can reach differences temperatures around 3 °C humidity close to 1.7%. An interesting feature UHI is associated with diurnal cycle differs...
Abstract To study the climatology of water balance over South America and analyze influence low-level jets (LLJs), a climate its main components was performed, specifically in Amazon La Plata basin (LPB) region, from 1979 to 2008. The results showed that on average for analysis period, LPB performed as sink moisture (ET < P) convergence regions, which accounted approximately 62% 43% precipitation, respectively. During 884 days with an occurrence LLJs were observed, occurring most...
This study examines rainfall events in Brazil, with emphasis on their potential to induce geo-hydrological hazards, like landslides and flash floods. Utilizing the CHIRPS dataset thresholds for landslides, we quantify analyze climatic hazards at a national level, providing perspective into relationship between precipitation patterns risks. Our findings aim contribute holistic understanding of risk, guiding strategic decisions disaster risk reduction climate change adaptation.
This study evaluated the atmospheric pattern precursors to occurrence of natural disasters (ND) in southern region Brazil (SRB) due passage frontal systems (FS). The results can be used as prognostics assist risk management with a set preventive and mitigating actions order minimize impact suffered by population. data were provided Centro de monitoramento e alertas desastres naturais (Cemaden). For analysis we ERA5 reanalysis data, precipitation dataset was estimated from Integrated...
The Northeast of Brazil (NEB) is the region with highest number municipal decrees emergency situation declaration caused by weather events in period from 2013 to 2022 and rate natural disasters per risk area. In NEB, city Recife its metropolitan are biggest localities populations areas. Focusing on this region, five extreme precipitation were chosen for simulations using WRF model diagnostics analyses. First, a set configurations was tested, including 11 microphysics (MPH) schemes, 9...
