The incidence of anal cancer is substantially higher among persons living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) than in general population. Similar to cervical cancer, preceded by high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs). Treatment for HSIL reduces progression cancer; however, data from prospective studies treatment prevent are lacking.

Women living with HIV (WLWH) experience high rates of anal cancer. Screening using cytology, high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) biopsies, can histologically diagnose cancer precursors called high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). The low specificity screening cytology results in HRA referral for many WLWH without HSIL. high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) may improve specificity.
