Global health systems are shifting toward value-based care in an effort to drive better outcomes the setting of rising costs. This shift requires a common definition value, starting with that matter most patients. The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), nonprofit initiative, was formed define standard sets by medical condition. In this article, we report efforts ICHOM's working group colorectal cancer. The composed multidisciplinary oncology specialists medicine,...
The researchers identified nine patient handling tasks that place nursing staff at high risk for musculoskeletal injuries. An expert panel redesigned these using new technologies and work practice controls. key objective was to evaluate the biomechanical benefit of tasks. Back shoulder muscle activity, forces on lumbar spine, joint moments, perceived comfort were evaluated in a laboratory setting. Using subjective data, 63 participants who performed compared with 71 used standard procedures....
The restoration of normal physical activity is a primary objective most chronic pain rehabilitative interventions, yet few clinically practical measures activation exist. Actigraphy one technology that promises to fill this void in the field outcomes assessment. This study evaluates measurement properties several commercially available actigraphs: Actiwatch-Score (AW-S). We conducted separate trials examine concordance between units when worn concurrently at same and different body sites...
The purpose of this study was to assess the performance lateral transfer devices compared with traditional draw sheet method in acute care settings through subjective feedback caregivers actually using devices. Every 2 weeks, eight participating units each received one devices, which had been randomly selected. Data were collected caregiver surveys, rated comfort, ease use, perceived injury risk, time efficiency, and patient safety. An overall rating calculated as sum these five categories....
This study investigated the severity of injuries associated with falling from bed and effectiveness injury-prevention strategies. Injury criteria were calculated for head- feet-first falls six heights onto a tiled surface floor mat. These values indicated 25% chance experiencing serious head injury as result height 97.5 cm surface. Risk increased to 40% when extrapolated added by bedrails. Using mat decreased this risk less than 1% bedrail falls. Calculated impact forces skull fracture...
Abstract Prolonged standing during surgical procedures poses a high risk of causing musculoskeletal disorders, including back, leg, and foot pain, which can be chronic or acute in nature. Ergonomic Tool 4: Solutions for Standing Perioperative Settings provides recommendations relieving the strain prolonged standing, use antifatigue mats, supportive footwear, sit/stand stools, that are based on well‐accepted ergonomic safety concepts, current research, access to new emerging technology.
Abstract Habitat loss and fragmentation have been identified as important factors in the decline of grassland bird populations. However, population declines are apparent even prairie ecosystems that remain relatively intact suggesting additional involved. The degradation breeding habitat may be one such factor, but few studies examined habitat-specific demography birds, thus little is known how changes related to declines. We addressed this question by comparing reproductive success...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy friction-reducing devices used for lateral patient transfers. A mannequin represent a dependent transferred laterally from bed stretcher. One male investigator repeated task using 11 comparable transfer aids or techniques. Applied force measured dynamometer; postural analysis prepared still photography. Mean applied force, spinal forces, and population strength capabilities were calculated. most efficacious mechanism transfers had...
Abstract Positioning or repositioning a patient on the OR bed in preparation for surgical procedure presents high risk musculoskeletal disorders, such as low‐back and shoulder injuries, perioperative personnel. Safe handling requires knowledge of current ergonomic safety concepts, scientific evidence, equipment devices to ensure that neither nor caregiver is at injury. AORN Ergonomic Tool 2: Repositioning Supine Patient Bed provides guidelines enable personnel determine safe methods...
Manual retraction, a task performed to expose the surgical site, poses high risk for musculoskeletal disorders that affect hands, arms, shoulders, neck, and back. In recent years, minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures have led development of multifunctional instruments retractors capable performing these functions that, in many cases, has eliminated need manual retraction. During are not endoscopically, use self-retaining enables assistant handle tissue exposure techniques do require...
Pushing and pulling equipment in around the OR can place high shear force demands on perioperative team members' shoulder back muscles joints. These forces may lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders. AORN Ergonomic Tool 7: Pushing, Pulling, Moving Equipment Wheels help members assess risk of pushing tasks setting. The tool provides evidence-based suggestions about when assistive devices should be used for these is based current ergonomic safety concepts, scientific evidence,...
Computer simulations using multibody models have been extensively applied to vehicular crash testing but rarely used investigate falls. This article investigated planar and three-dimensional of a single physical test Hybrid III anthropomorphic dummy falling from bed compared them with common estimation method. The effects initial model position velocity on simulated peak resultant head deceleration impact criterion (HIC) were determined while all contact parameters held constant. Improving...
Helmets are used for sports, military, and transportation to protect against impact forces associated injuries. The common belief among end users is that the helmet protects whole head, including brain. However, current consensus biomechanists sports neurologists indicates helmets do not provide significant protection concussion brain In this paper authors present existing scientific evidence on mechanisms underlying traumatic head injuries, along with a biomechanical evaluation of 21...
In a motorcycle accident, the and rider typically become independent, each following their own path to final rest. Consequently, biomechanical analysis of accident is complex. A model assess kinematics associated with accidents presented, which may be important forensic scientists involved in such events. This can also applied other activities, including cycling, equestrian sports, skiing, skating, running, etc. It first understand mechanisms by ejected from how drag factors affect...
