As part of the Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation (HIVE) study, acute respiratory infections (ARI) have been identified in children and adults from 2010 to 2018.Annually, 890 1441 individuals were followed contacted weekly report ARIs. Specimens collected during illness tested for human coronaviruses (HCoV) types OC43, 229E, HKU1, NL63.In total, 993 HCoV 8 years, with OC43 most commonly seen 229E least. HCoVs detected a limited time period, between December April/May peaked...
Abstract Objective Voltage‐gated sodium channels (SCNs) share similar amino acid sequence, structure, and function. Genetic variants in the four human brain‐expressed SCN genes SCN1A/2A/3A/8A have been associated with heterogeneous epilepsy phenotypes neurodevelopmental disorders. To better understand biology of seizure susceptibility ‐related epilepsies, our aim was to determine similarities differences between channel disorders, allowing us develop a broader perspective on precision...
Measles, a highly contagious respiratory virus with the potential to cause severe complications, hospitalization, and death, was declared eliminated from United States in 2000; however, ongoing global transmission, infections still occur. On March 7, 2024, Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed case measles male aged 1 year residing temporary shelter for migrants Chicago.Given congregate nature setting, high transmissibility measles, low vaccination coverage among residents, had...
Wastewater surveillance has been used to assist public health authorities in tracking local transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The usefulness wastewater track community spread other respiratory pathogens, including influenza virus and syncytial (RSV), is less clear. During the 2022-23 diseases season, concentrations A RSV samples three major Wisconsin cities were compared with emergency department (ED) visits associated these pathogens. In all cities, higher numbers ED (Kendall's tau range =...
The early care and education of young children, more commonly known as child care, is a ubiquitous experience in the US across geographies socioeconomic levels. Abstract Background Work-related exposures play an important role in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, yet few studies have compared SARS-CoV-2 expsoure risk across occupations and industries. Methods During September 2020 to May 2021, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services collected occupation industry data as part routine disease 2019 (COVID-19) case investigations. Adults aged 18–64 years with confirmed or probable COVID-19 were assigned...
The Chicago Department of Public Health tested wastewater samples for the presence Monkeypox Virus (MPXV) from March 13 through June 26, 2023. There were persistent detections prior to reported cases. This indicated baseline levels MPXV prevalence might warrant routine monitoring. Detections in areas without corresponding clinical cases highlight where are being under-reported by traditional surveillance.
Measles is a highly infectious, vaccine-preventable disease that can cause severe illness, hospitalization, and death. A measles outbreak associated with migrant shelter in Chicago occurred during February-April 2024, which total of 57 confirmed cases were identified, including 52 among residents, three staff members, two community members known link to the shelter. CDC simulated residents using dynamic model, updated real time as additional produce forecasts assess impact public health...

Accurate estimates of the total burden severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are needed to inform policy, planning, and response. We sought quantify SARS-CoV-2 cases, hospitalizations, deaths by age in Michigan. Coronavirus disease 2019 cases reported Michigan Disease Surveillance System were multiplied time-specific adjustment factors correct for under-detection. Adjustment estimated a model fit incidence data seroprevalence estimates. Age-specific hospitalization,...
Background and Objective: Childcare attendance is a common risk factor for acute respiratory illness (ARI) in young children. Our goal was to better understand the specific viruses that predominate childcare, which may support development of tailored prevention intervention strategies childcare settings. Methods: Using data from prospective household cohort ARI surveillance, we assessed specimen 1418 ARIs reported by 359 childcare-aged children over 6 study seasons (2012/2013 through...
The Michigan Child Care Related Infections Surveillance Program (MCRISP) is a novel, online illness surveillance system used by collection of southeast child care centers. Recently established, MCRISP has not been assessed epidemiologically. We created epidemic curves for both respiratory and gastrointestinal disease over three seasons, comparing these to data from an established statewide system. Results suggest that center-based timely, functional, potential as early sentinel community epidemics.
Objectives. To assess the rate of COVID-19 among in-person K-12 educators and rate's association with various prevention policies in school districts. Methods. We linked actively working, Wisconsin to cases onset from September 2 November 24, 2021. A mixed-effects Cox proportional hazards model, adjusted for pertinent person- community-level confounders, compared hazard working districts without specific policies. Results. In-person that required masking students staff experienced 19% lower...
Abstract Introduction In Southeast Michigan, active surveillance studies monitor influenza activity in hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and community households. Across five respiratory seasons, we assessed the contribution of data from each three networks towards improving our overall understanding regional circulation. Methods All used case definitions for acute illness (ARI) molecularly tested research‐collected specimens. Age‐ network‐stratified epidemic curves were created A B. We...
University students commonly received COVID-19 vaccinations before returning to U.S. campuses in the Fall of 2021. Given likely immunologic variation among based on differences type primary series and/or booster dose vaccine received, we conducted serologic investigations September and December 2021 a large university campus Wisconsin assess anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels. We collected blood samples, demographic information, illness vaccination history from convenience sample students.
<title>UNSTRUCTURED</title> The Michigan Child Care Related Infection Surveillance Program (MCRISP), launched in 2013, has played a crucial role tracking illness within regional child care centers Washtenaw County to support public health initiatives. Despite its utility, MCRISP encountered difficulties effectively presenting data on trends directors, who are pivotal the collection of essential data. To address these challenges, we conducted comprehensive, user-feedback driven redesign...
Leveraging user feedback, we redesigned a novel disease monitoring utility to allow for bidirectional data flow and in this letter offer insights into that process as well lessons learned.
Background: Approximately two-thirds of children aged <5 years receive out-of-home child care. Childcare attendees have an increased risk infections compared to not in childcare settings, possibly due their close contact a shared environment. As multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) increasingly move from healthcare-associated community can provide venue for further transmission these pathogens. Our objective was evaluate the bioburden pathogens present on fomites centers and how surface...
