Chaetomargoreicheia Magrini Bulirsch, 2005 is a recently established genus of scaritine ground beetles (Bulirsch Guéorguiev, 2008) (treated by certain authors as subgenus the Reicheadella Reitter, 1913) (Magrini 2005; Balkenohl, 2017) which currently contains two endogean species inhabiting Balkan Peninsula: zoufali (Reitter, and C. lakotai 2005) (Balkenohl, 2003, 2017; Bulirsch 2008). The aforementioned are montane inhabit confined geographic areas (Jeannel, 1957; 2005). was found only in...
Leptomeson Jeannel, 1924, originally treated as a subgenus of Anthroherpon Reitter, 1889 (Jeannel, 1924), was erected to distinct genus by Guéorguiev (1990). It currently includes 13 endemic taxa (nine species and four subspecies) (Perreau, 2015), which five are recently described (Giachino et al., 2011). All troglobitic, montane or insular, distributed in narrow Dinaric area the proximity Adriatic Sea coast belonging Croatia Bosnia Herzegovina 2000; Giachino 2011) (Fig. 1).
Three subterranean leptodirine leiodid taxa, viz., Bozidaria Ćurčić & Pavićević gen. nov., serbooccidentalis et sp. nov. and Proleonhardella (Proleonhardella) tarensis are described diagnosed. belongs to the phyletic series of “Leonhardella”. The new beetle taxa differ from their closest relatives in numerous morphological characters. They most likely belong lineages Pliocene age. endemic Dinaric mountain chain western Serbia. Keys genera “Leonhardella” genus Jeannel, 1910 included.
We performed a study of the nonlinear optical properties chemically purified chitin and insect cuticle using two-photon excited autofluorescence (TPEF) second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. Excitation spectrum, fluorescence time, polarization sensitivity, bleaching speed were measured. have found that maximum signal requires an excitation wavelength below 850 nm. At longer wavelengths, we able to penetrate more than 150-μm deep into sample through chitinous structures. The power was...
The adults of three ground-beetle species were induced to discharge defensive secretions into vials. obtained by CH2Cl2 extraction. Altogether 11 compounds identified GC-MS analysis. Calosoma sycophanta possesses 10 compounds, Carabus ullrichii seven, while Abax parallelepipedus has six compounds. Methacrylic, tiglic and isobutyric acids present in all samples. first two organic predominant the extracts parallelepipedus. Methacrylic acid salicylaldehyde major sycophanta. angelic components...
Macroecologists seek to identify drivers of community turnover ( β -diversity) through broad spatial scales. However, the influence local habitat features in driving broad-scale -diversity patterns remains largely untested, owing objective challenges associating local-scale variables continental-framed datasets. We examined relative contribution local- versus continental patterns, using a uniquely suited dataset cave-dwelling spider communities across Europe (35–70° latitude). Generalized...
Although all ground beetles have pygidial glands homologous in structure and function, there are many differences among species, often significant, terms of chemical composition the secretion morphology gland components. In this paper, two predatory beetle species genus Carabus, namely C. (Tomocarabus) convexus (Procrustes) coriaceus, were subjected to chemical, morphological histological study their glands' secretions. Altogether, three carboxylic acids isolated, reservoir other glandular...
The pseudoscorpion sample from a cave in Montenegro has been studied. A new species, Chthonius (Globochthonius) medeonis n. sp. is described. reanalysis of the type material (Ephippiochthonius) polychaetus Hadzi supports its transfer to subgenus (Globochthonius Beier). species studied considered be endemic Balkan Peninsula. diagnostic characteristics analyzed taxon are thoroughly described or figured. Taxonomic interrelationships and geographic distribution briefly discussed.
A new cave-dwelling pseudoscorpion from the Badanj (or Vilisnica) Cave, nr. Sveti Filip i Jakov, Dalmatia (Croatia) is thoroughly described and illustrated. Its main morphometric characteristics important diagnostic traits are analyzed compared to those of its phenetically close congener Chthonius (Chthonius) absoloni Beier Dalmatia. The species relict endemic area studied.
We analyzed the diet composition of adult Common Toads (Bufo bufo) in Europe to define their general preferences with use data collected Serbia and published from Great Britain, Spain, France, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, Bulgaria. also addressed potential correlation between body size prey size, sex-based food niche partitioning adults as suggested by pronounced sexual dimorphism this species. Analysis revealed that European feed most frequently on insects, e.g., Coleoptera Hymenoptera...
Two new species of endemic and relict epigean dwellers the genus Chthonius C. L. Koch, have been described from Croatia. From its phenetically close congeners (C. litoralis Hadzi dalmatinus Hadzi), (Chthonius) torakensis n. sp. is distinguished in many important respects. In addition, (Ephippiochthonius) cikolae (also Croatia) differs closest forms (E.) lychidis Curcic tetrachelatus (Preyssler) by morphological characters form different body parts. Both are illustrated, diagnosed thoroughly...
The iridescent features of the butterfly species Apatura iris (Linnaeus, 1758) and A. ilia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) were studied. We recognized structural color scales only on dorsal side both fore hind wings males aforementioned species. scale dimensions microstructure analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) transmission (TEM). optical properties measured it was found that peak reflectivity is around 380 nm, with spectral width (full at half maximum) approximately 50 nm in...
Two new endemic cave pseudoscorpion species from the Petropavlova Pecina Cave, village Bihovi, 6 km Trebinje, Herzegovina, are presented, thoroughly described and illustrated. These named Chthonius (Globochthonius) petroupauli n. sp. Roncus paulipetrou Their main morphometric characteristics important diagnostic features analyzed compared to those of their phylogenetically closest congeners.
The antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretion released by adult individuals troglophilic ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean, 1828), applying microdilution method with aim to detect minimal inhibitory concentration, bactericidal concentration and fungicidal has been investigated. In addition, morphology glands is observed. We have tested 16 laboratory clinical strains human pathogens - eight bacterial both gram-positive gram-negative species fungal...
Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) are widespread in subterranean ecosystems worldwide and represent an important component of trophic webs. Yet, global-scale diversity patterns spiders still mostly unknown. In the frame CAWEB project, a European joint network cave arachnologists, we collected data on cave-dwelling spider communities across Europe order to explore their continental patterns. Two main datasets were compiled: one listing all species recorded numerous localities another with high...
A new subterranean leptodirine leiodid beetle, Speoplanes biocovensis bosnicus Vrbica, Vesović, Rađa & Ćurčić, ssp. n., is described and diagnosed from a pit in southern Bosnia Herzegovina. This the first discovery of genus Müller, 1911 this country outside Croatia. Important morphological features taxon are presented, including aspects male female genitalia. The subspecies endemic to Dinaric mountain range key identification taxa added.
The Balkan region is rich in limestone deposits, which have created one of the largest hotspots subterranean biodiversity. This paper gives an overview diversity terrestrial arthropods Resava Cave eastern Serbia. cave protected and has status a natural monument. At same time, it most visited caves Serbia its surroundings. Our study comprises results three years biospeleological investigations famous Serbian combination with data from few available literature sources on arthropod fauna cave....
