The physics base for the ITER Physics Design Guidelines is reviewed in view of application to DEMO and areas are pointed out which improvement needed arrive at a consistent set Guidelines. Amongst proposed improvements, area power exhaust plays crucial role since predictive capability present-day models low this expected play major limiting designs due much larger value Ptot/R than devices even ITER.
In the European fusion roadmap, ITER is followed by a demonstration power reactor (DEMO), for which conceptual design under development. This paper reports first results of coherent effort to develop relevant physics knowledge that (DEMO Physics Basis), carried out experts. The program currently includes investigations in areas scenario modeling, transport, MHD, heating & current drive, fast particles, plasma wall interaction and disruptions.
Optimal design and use of electron cyclotron heating requires that accurate relatively quick computer codes be available for prediction wave coupling, propagation, damping current drive at realistic levels EC power. To this end, a number have been developed in laboratories worldwide. A detailed comparison these is desirable since they variety methods modelling the behaviour effects waves. The approach used benchmarking study to apply small representative cases. Following minor remedial work...
Abstract The achievable efficiency for external current drive through electron-cyclotron waves in a demonstration tokamak reactor is investigated. Two possible designs, one steady state and pulsed operation, are considered. Beam propagation, absorption modelled employing the beam-tracing technique including momentum conservation electron–electron collisions. It found that midplane injection limited by second-harmonic at levels consistent with previous studies. Higher efficiencies can be...
The ITER electron cyclotron (EC) upper port antenna (or launcher) is nearing completion of the detailed design stage and final build-to-print will soon start. main objective this launcher to drive current locally stabilize neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) (depositing ECCD inside island that forms on either q = 3/2 or 2 rational magnetic flux surfaces) control sawtooth instability (deposit near 1 surface). should be capable steering focused beam deposition location resonant surface over...
A 24 MW Electron Cyclotron (EC) system operating at 170 GHz and 3600 s pulse length is to be installed on ITER. The EC plant shall deliver 20 of this power the plasma for Heating Current Drive (H&CD) applications. designed initiation, central heating, current drive, profile tailoring, Magneto-hydrodynamic control (in particular, sawteeth Neo-classical Tearing Mode) in flat-top phase plasma. preliminary design review was performed 2012, which identified a need extended application...
The GRILLIX code is presented with which plasma turbulence/transport in various geometries can be simulated 3D. distinguishing feature of the that it based on flux-coordinate independent approach (FCI) (Hariri and Ottaviani 2013 Comput. Phys. Commun. 184 2419; Stegmeir et al 2016 198 139). Cylindrical or Cartesian grids are used perpendicular operators discretised via standard finite difference methods parallel a field line tracing interpolation procedure (field map). This offers very high...
High spatial resolution Doppler backscattering measurements in JET have enabled new insights into the development of edge Er. We observe fine-scale structures Er well with a wave number krρi≈0.4-0.8, consistent stationary zonal flows, characteristics which vary density. The flow amplitude and wavelength both decrease local collisionality, such that E×B shear increases. Above minimum L-H transition power threshold dependence on density, flows are present during L mode disappear following...
A selection of achievements and first physics results are presented the European Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (EFDA ITM-TF) simulation framework, which aims to provide a standardized platform an integrated modelling suite validated numerical codes for prediction complete plasma discharge arbitrary tokamak. The framework developed by ITM-TF, based on generic data structure including both simulated experimental data, allows development sophisticated simulations (workflows)...
A significant reduction of the turbulence-induced anomalous heat transport has been observed in recent studies magnetically confined plasmas presence a fast-ion fractions. Therefore, control populations with external heating might open way to more optimistic scenarios for future fusion devices. However, little is known about parameter range relevance these effects which are often only highlighted correlation substantial electromagnetic fluctuations. Here, fast ion induced stabilization also...
A novel type of transport barrier for reducing turbulent in the core a high temperature magnetically confined fusion plasma has been observed during experiments performed on ASDEX Upgrade tokamak.
Recent experiments at ASDEX Upgrade have achieved advanced scenarios with high βN (>3) and confinement enhancement over ITER98(y, 2) scaling, HH98y2 = 1.1–1.5, in steady state. These discharges been obtained a modified divertor configuration for Upgrade, allowing operation higher triangularity, changed neutral beam injection (NBI) system, more tangential, off-axis deposition. The figure of merit, βNHITER89-P, reaches up to 7.5 several seconds plasmas approaching stationary conditions....
Discovered as inhibitory autoreceptors in central histaminergic pathways, histamine H3-receptors may also modulate peripheral cholinergic and adrenergic function. Recently, were reported to inhibit inotropic responses guinea pig atria, possibly at prejunctional sites. We have assessed whether the H3-mediated modulation of cardiac activities results from a reduction norepinephrine release. found that (R) alpha-methylhistamine, selective H3-receptor agonist, attenuates chronotropic response...
Beyond a certain heating power, measured and predicted distributions of neutral beam injection (NBI) driven currents deviate from each other even in the absence MHD instabilities. The most reasonable explanation is redistribution fast NBI ions on time scale smaller than current time. hypothesis by background turbulence discussed. Direct numerical simulation test particles given field electrostatic indicates that for parameters thermal particle diffusion can indeed be similar. High quality...
The interaction between small scale turbulence (of the order of ion Larmor radius) and mesoscale magnetic islands is investigated within gyrokinetic framework. Turbulence, driven by background temperature density gradients, over nonlinear mode coupling, pumps energy into long wavelength modes, can result in an electrostatic vortex that coincides with island. strength strongly enhanced modified plasma flow response connected change topology, transport it generates compete parallel motion...
A tokamak equilibrium reconstruction can benefit much from internal measurements of the current distribution. If lacking robust measurements, will be ill posed in plasma core, not allowing for a sensible estimation Such deficiencies compensated by modeling distribution evolution employing diffusion equation between successive equilibria. scheme coupling predictive with an inverse Grad-Shafranov solver minimizing least-squares criterion on measured and modeled data is proposed.
