The European DEMO is a pulsed device with pulse length of 2 hours. functions devoted to the heating and current drive system are: plasma breakdown, ramp-up flat-top where fusion reactions occur, control during phase, finally ramp-down. EU-DEMO project was in Pre-Concept Design Phase 2014-2020, meaning that some cases, design values precise requirements from physics point view were not yet frozen. A total 130 MW considered for all phases plasma: flat top, 30 required neoclassical tearing...
Experimental results using a step-frequency tunable D-band gyrotron are reported. The short pulse (~3 ms) is equipped with an elliptically brazed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond Brewster angle output window. It designed for the operation in frequency range from 111.6 up to 165.7 GHz. Operating parameters ten different frequencies corresponding equal number of cavity operating modes has been measured. A minimum power 830 kW and peak 1.3 MW have realized. For all frequencies, RF beam...
Abstract The European DEMO (EU-DEMO) reactor studies within EUROfusion aim to develop a fusion power plant concept. large tokamak device needs an auxiliary heating which, at the present stage, is provided by Electron Cyclotron (EC) system with up 130 MW foreseen reach different regions of plasma for heating, suppression instabilities and possibility support ramp-up ramp-down phases. conceptual design based on 2 coaxial-cavity gyrotron sources, transmission line (TL) using both circular...
We report on high-resolution differential conductance experiments nanoscale superconductor-ferromagnet tunnel junctions with ultrathin oxide barriers. observe subgap features that are symmetric respect to bias and shift according the Zeeman energy an applied magnetic field. These can be explained by resonant transport via Andreev bound states induced spin-active scattering at interface. From of states, both magnitude sign spin-dependent interfacial phase shifts between spin-up spin-down...
For the development of a DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant design auxiliary heating systems is key activity in order to achieve controlled burning plasma. The present mix considers electron cyclotron resonance (ECRH), neutral beam injection (NBI) and ion (ICRH) with target power plasma about 50 MW for each system. main tasks assigned EC system are breakdown assisted start-up, L-H transition current ramp up burn, MHD stability control assistance down. consequent requirements used conceptual...
Gyrotron R&D within the EUROfusion Work Package Heating and Current Drive (WPHCD) is addressing challenging requirements posed on gyrotrons by European concept for a demonstration fusion power plant (EU DEMO). These requirements, as specified WPHCD, ask highly reliable robust long-pulse operation of gyrotron, delivering 2 MW microwave at frequencies above 200 GHz with high overall efficiency 60% option fast frequency step-tunability. To meet these targets, which are clearly beyond today's...
