After the 2017 Ebola virus (EBOV) outbreak in Likati, a district northern Democratic Republic of Congo, we sampled small mammals from location where primary case-patient presumably acquired infection. None tested positive for EBOV RNA or antibodies against EBOV, highlighting ongoing challenge detecting animal reservoirs EBOV.
Abstract Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has recently emerged as an alternative to morphological and molecular tools identify tick species. In this study, we set out evaluate confirm the ability of MALDI-TOF MS different species ticks collected in Democratic Republic Congo preserved 70% ethanol. A total 575 ticks, which 530 were from domestic pigs 45 wild animals, subjected analysis intraspecies reproducibility interspecies specificity profiles...
Abstract The European Union prohibits the import of meat (products) unless specifically authorised and certified as being eligible for import. Nevertheless, various scientific papers report that passengers from west central African countries illegally large quantities meat, including bushmeat, into Europe via its international airports. They also suggest bushmeat is an organised luxury market in Europe. In present study we explore several aspects Brussels, Belgium. We demonstrate clandestine...
In the search for natural reservoirs of hepatitis C virus (HCV), a broad diversity non-human viruses within Hepacivirus genus has been uncovered. However, evolutionary dynamics that shaped and timescale hepaciviruses evolution remain elusive. To gain further insights into origins this genus, we screened large dataset wild mammal samples (n = 1,672) from Africa Asia, generated 34 full-length hepacivirus genomes. Phylogenetic analysis these data together with publicly available genomes...
Abstract We determined near complete and monkeypox virus genomes in a shrew ( Crocidura littoralis ), two squirrels Funisciurus anerythrus, bayonii produced shorter sequences from rats Stochomys longicaudatus, Cricetomys sp. 2) originating the Democratic Republic of Congo. This suggests that number rodents besides (families Muridae Nesomyidae) shrews (order Eulipotyphla) are potential reservoirs.
The wildlife reservoir and spillover mechanisms of the Ebola virus remain elusive despite extensive research efforts in endemic areas. This study employed a One Health approach to examine circulation associated human exposure risks Tshuapa province Democratic Republic Congo. In 2021, we collected 1015 samples from 888 animals, predominantly small mammals, 380 inhabitants Inkanamongo village, site an disease outbreak 2014. These were screened for evidence current (RNA) or past (IgG...
Abstract We determined a near complete and monkeypox virus (Mpox) genome in an elephant shrew ( Petrodromus tetradactylus ), squirrel Funisciurus bayonii produced shorter sequencesobtained from two rats Stochomys longicaudatus, Cricetomys sp. 2 ) originating the Democratic Republic of Congo. also ran series molecular clock analyses that all agree on recent, clearly post Dahomey gap opening diversification Mpox. This suggests that, besides squirrels, number rodents shrews are involved Mpox...
ABSTRACT The processes involved in acquiring, trading, preparing, and consuming wild meat pose significant risks for the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases. Several major viral outbreaks have been directly linked to supply chain, yet our knowledge virome many mammals this chain remains limited disproportionately focused on certain mammalian taxa pathogens. This report presents findings a metagenomic screening 99 specimens belonging 27 African mammal species one domesticated species,...
Pangolins are currently considered the most endangered mammal species due to their high rank in local and international traffic. This is protected DRC worldwide, unfortunately it threatened by numerous human actions. The objective of this study identify different reasons for which these animals exploited, provide information determine from opinions respondents current state population 2015 today hunting techniques populations. We carried out surveys households hunters, farmers people...
