We investigated synanthropic small mammals in the Ethiopian Highlands as potential reservoirs for human pathogens and found that 2 rodent species, white-footed mouse Awash multimammate mouse, are carriers of novel Mobala virus strains. The also carries a hantavirus, second Murinae-associated hantavirus Africa.

Hantaviruses are RNA viruses primarily carried by rodents, soricomorphs, and bats. The data about the distribution genetic diversity of these often limited, especially in most regions sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, majority representatives were identified western African localities, while only three hantaviruses have been reported East Africa to date. In this study, a total 1866 small mammals captured between 2009 2014 various countries Eastern (Ethiopia, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania)...

Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV; genus Hepacivirus) represents a major public health problem, infecting about three per cent of the human population. Because no animal reservoir carrying closely related hepaciviruses has been identified, zoonotic origins HCV still remain unresolved. Motivated by recent findings divergent in rodents and plausible African origin genotypes, we have screened large collection small mammals samples from seven sub-Saharan countries. Out 4,303 screened, eighty were...

Rodents are a speciose group of mammals with strong zoonotic potential. Some parts Africa still underexplored for the occurrence rodent-borne pathogens, despite this high Angola is at convergence three major biogeographical regions sub-Saharan Africa, each harbouring specific rodent community. This rodent-rich area is, therefore, strategic studying diversity and evolution viruses. In study we examined 290 small mammals, almost all rodents, presence mammarenavirus hantavirus RNA. While no was...

The wildlife reservoir and spillover mechanisms of the Ebola virus remain elusive despite extensive research efforts in endemic areas. This study employed a One Health approach to examine circulation associated human exposure risks Tshuapa province Democratic Republic Congo. In 2021, we collected 1015 samples from 888 animals, predominantly small mammals, 380 inhabitants Inkanamongo village, site an disease outbreak 2014. These were screened for evidence current (RNA) or past (IgG...

ABSTRACT The processes involved in acquiring, trading, preparing, and consuming wild meat pose significant risks for the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases. Several major viral outbreaks have been directly linked to supply chain, yet our knowledge virome many mammals this chain remains limited disproportionately focused on certain mammalian taxa pathogens. This report presents findings a metagenomic screening 99 specimens belonging 27 African mammal species one domesticated species,...

Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV; genus Hepacivirus ) represents a major public health problem, infecting about 3 % of the human population ( ± 185,000,000 people). Because no plausible animal reservoir carrying closely related hepaciviruses has been identified, zoonotic origins HCV still remain elusive. Motivated by recent findings divergent in rodents and African origin genotypes, we have screened comprehensive collection small mammals samples from seven sub-Saharan countries. Out 4,303...
