Higher Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes mushrooms possess various immunological anticancer properties. They also offer important health benefits exhibit a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, cytotoxic, immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiallergic, antidepressive, antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, digestive, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, nephroprotective, osteoprotective, hypotensive activities. Abstract The mushrooms have contributed to the development of active ingredients fundamental importance in field pharmaceutical chemistry as well important tools human and animal health, nutrition, functional food. This review considers studies on beneficial effects medicinal nutrition health humans farm animals. An overview chemical structure composition mycochemicals is presented this with particular reference phenolic compounds, triterpenoids sterols, fatty acids lipids, polysaccharides,...
Leccinum scabrum (Bull.) Gray (Boletaceae) is an edible mycorrhizal species with potential application interest due to its food and medicinal properties. A field investigation carried out during summer in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, located along border between Belarus Poland allowed collect samples for chemical composition analysis antibacterial activity evaluation. Mushroom extracts were prepared microwave-assisted as well ultrasound-assisted extraction techniques (UAE MAE). The of a...
The Pleurotus eryngii species-complex includes populations of choice edible mushrooms, growing in the greater Mediterranean area close association with different genera plants family Apiaceae. Their distinct host-specialization served as principal criterion for discrimination several taxa; however, genetic relationships among various P. ecotypes remain ambiguous. In present study, 46 strains a wide range geographical origins were isolated from Eryngium spp., Ferula communis, Cachrys...
Living organisms establish complex networks of mutualistic and antagonistic interactions in nature, which impact strongly on their own survival the stability whole population. Fungi, particular, can shape natural as well man-managed ecosystems due to ubiquitous occurrence range they with plants, animals other microbes. This review describes some examples fungal that are particular interest for ecological role, or because be exploited by man improve plant health and/or productivity...
This article presents the results of a study on plant diversity at different levels in residual forest stands, located historical Favorita Park Palermo, Italy (established and named 1799 by King Ferdinand IV House Bourbon). These aspects have naturally evolved for over two centuries, under minimal conditions anthropogenic disturbance (e.g. deforestation, fires, grazing activities, etc.). is especially true area known as “Bosco Niscemi”, spread about 8.5 hectares, centre park. Bosco Niscemi...
Among the alternative proteins aimed at replacing those of animal origin, fungal stand out as a promising resource capable meeting environmental, health, and ethical demands. Fungal biomasses, or mycoproteins, are indeed rich in other macro- micronutrients, while low fats. However, their production is an ongoing challenge. This study focused on submerged fermentation, highly controllable process that can couple high yields agro-industrial by-products exploitation growth media. Five medicinal...
An innovative menu based on the use of fresh and dried medicinal mushrooms, which is energetic, healthy, easy to make, adaptable any type diet, presented. Three edible mushrooms (Lentinula edodes, Grifola frondosa, Pleurotus ostreatus), are known for their nutritional properties, paired with typical Sicilian products used preparation a consisting an appetizer, first second course, pre-dessert, dessert. The proposed meets all our criteria.
Based on literature data and new field investigations, a checklist of the ornamental vascular flora Sicily is presented. Trees, shrubs, herbaceous, succulent plants growing in street trees, parks, private gardens, historic villas are included checklist. For each taxon, information growth forms, geographical biome origin, resident time, status (native/alien) Italy provided. A total 928 taxa (including 823 species s. str., 33 cultivars, 31 hybrids, 24 varieties, 9 subspecies, 8 forms),...
The Conca d’Oro of Palermo, a plain in NW Sicily significant historical and agricultural importance, has undergone landscape alterations due to strengthening urbanization. This paper analyses the evolution plant from early human settlements present by integrating records, cartographic analysis, floristic surveys. Three key periods change were identified: Roman-era deforestation for cereal cultivation, expansion irrigated agriculture under Arab rule, dominance citrus monoculture 19th century....

Fungi are organisms of significant importance not only for the crucial roles they undertake in nature but also many human activities that strictly dependent on them. Indeed, fungi possess fundamental positions ecosystems functioning including nutrient cycles and wood decomposition. As concerns human-related activities, edible non-edible mushrooms involved and/or exploited forestry, pharmaceutical industry food production; hence, nowadays represent a major economic source worldwide. In order...
Extracts of the Mediterranean culinary-medicinal Oyster mushrooms Pleurotus eryngii var. eryngii, P. ferulae, elaeoselini, and nebrodensis were tested for their in vitro growth inhibitory activity against a group bacterial reference strains medical relevance: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, S. epidermidis RP62A, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 15442, Escherichia coli ATCC10536. All species analyzed inhibited microorganisms varying degrees. The data included this paper elaeoselinii are new reports.
Abstract Pleurotus eryngii ( DC .) Quél. powder was used in bread production. Three dough trials (0, 5 and 10% of mushroom) were obtained with commercial baker's yeast. P. first tested against several yeast species; trial characterised by the highest pH total titratable acidity. did not influence negatively fermentation process, since all reached levels 10 8 CFU g −1 . Mushroom decreased height softness, increased crust redness crumb void fraction cell density and, although breads scored...
In recent years, fungi have been recognized as producers of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, agents important for the prevention Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study aimed to examine AChE inhibitory, antioxidative and antibacterial activity two different Schizophyllum commune strains that originated from Serbia (SRB) Italy (IT). Submerged cultivation grown mycelia (M) fermentation broth (F) ethanol (EtOH) polysaccharide (PSH) extracts lasted 7, 14, 21 28 days. For Ellman method was...
Abstract A remarkable increase in knowledge of fungal biodiversity Italy has occurred the last five years. The authors report up-to-date numbers fungi (Basidiomycota and Ascomycota) by regions together with distributional ecological data on hypogeous fungi. Specific case studies such as alpine fungi, orchid mycorrhizas symbionts, invasive species, use macrofungi food red squirrels are analyzed. In situ conservation strategies carried out target species and/or taxonomic groups also indicated.
The wide consumption of wild fungi by the local population is basis for an evaluation as yet unknown nutritional composition some selected species. Wild edible mushrooms (Fistulina hepatica, Infundibulicybe geotropa, Laetiporus sulphureus, Macrolepiota procera var. and Suillus granulatus) were collected in a number Sicilian (southern Italian) forest ecosystems analysed according to standard methodologies fungal analysis, their basic (ash, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate vitamin). results...
