Prevention of the coagulation cascade and platelet activation is foremost demand for biomaterials in contact with blood. In this review we describe underlying mechanisms these processes offer current state antithrombotic strategies. We give an overview methods to prevent protein adhesion, as well techniques immobilize biochemically active molecules on biomaterial surfaces.
