The prevalence and magnitude of childhood obesity are increasing dramatically. We examined the effect varying degrees on metabolic syndrome its relation to insulin resistance C-reactive protein adiponectin levels in a large, multiethnic, multiracial cohort children adolescents. We administered standard glucose-tolerance test 439 obese, 31 overweight, 20 nonobese adolescents. Baseline measurements included blood pressure plasma lipid, protein, levels. Levels triglycerides, high-density...
Childhood obesity, epidemic in the United States, has been accompanied by an increase prevalence of type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents. We determined impaired glucose tolerance a multiethnic cohort 167 obese
A preschool girl who exhibited a low rate of social interaction with her peers was helped to achieve sustained play relations through systematic use behavior principles. positive reinforcer, teacher attention, given consequent upon another child and withheld solitary or attempted solely an adult. Interaction children rose markedly; oneto-one interactions adults decreased. Reversal procedures depressed child-child increased adults; reinstatement original restored peer interaction. As became...
Objective. To describe the clinical features that distinguish accidental from abusive head injury in hospitalized children <24 months of age. Methods. Prospective study age for between August 1, 2000, and October 31, 2002. During hospitalization, had computed tomographic scans brain, serial neurologic examinations, dilated ophthalmoscopic eye evaluation by a social worker, and, some cases, child abuse specialist. Outcome Measures. The main outcome measure was proportion each group...
Summary A whey‐based puffed snack food was produced on a twin‐screw extruder to determine the effect of varying starch type (normal corn and pregelatinised waxy), protein (regular instantised whey concentrate) concentration (16%, 32% 40%) physical chemical characteristics an extruded‐expanded food. Increasing normal cornstarch significantly reduced extrudate expansion ratio, air cell size, water solubility index increased density, breaking force. Protein affected absorption water‐soluble...
OBJECTIVE—Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a pre-diabetic state of increasing prevalence among obese adolescents. The purpose this study was to determine the natural history progression from normal (NGT) IGT in RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—We determined evolution β-cell function, insulin sensitivity (SI), and multiethnic group 60 adolescents over course approximately 30 months. Each subject underwent three serial 3-h oral tests. Dynamic, static, total responsivity (Φd, Φs, Φtot,...
A 41/2-YR-OLD BOY WITH EXCESSIVELY SHORT SPAN OF ATTENTION WAS HELPED TO ACQUIRE MORE EXTENDED ATTENDING BEHAVIOR THROUGH THE SYSTEMATIC PROGRAMING CONTINGENCIES ADULT SOCIAL REINFORCEMENT. WHEN CHILD REMAINED SINGLE ACTIVITY FOR 1 CONTINUOUS MIN., TEACHERS IMMEDIATELY GAVE AND APPROVAL AS LONG HE THAT ACTIVITY. WITHHELD THEIR CONSEQUENT UPON ALL OTHER BEHAVIOR. WITHIN 7 DAYS NUMBER CHANGES DECREASED MARKEDLY. REVERSAL THESE PROCEDURES REINSTATED HYPERACTIVE ORIGINAL REINFORCEMENT WERE...
An autistic child was observed while on a hospital ward. Observation revealed that the clinical staff gave considerably more attention to his bizarre, inappropriate behavior than acceptable responses. Subsequently these two classes of were and recorded by independent observers whose reliability averaged 85 percent. Next given social primary reinforcement for appropriate behaviors which included compliance requests, comprehensible verbalizations, use play materials, learning academic skills....
ABSTRACT: The USDA FSIS meat and poultry jerky compliance guidelines recommend a high humidity or liquid immersion pasteurization step before drying. objective of this study was to evaluate the effects (>90%) wet marinade on characteristics (water activity, moisture/protein ratio, total aerobic plate count [TAC]) sensory properties. Jerky pasteurized by nonmarinade method A (76.6 °C dry bulb, 54.4 oven bulb temperature for 1 h) had highest scores spice intensity interior cured color...
Twelve to 15 children with problem behaviors were enrolled in a demonstration head start class. The goals of the project were: (a) provide remedial services for these through application behavior modification procedures; (b) teachers and related personnel in-service training techniques; (c) conduct applied research based on behavioral analyses teacher-child interactions. Two case studies are presented. first concerns an aggressively disruptive child, second, child whose total repertoire...
A model system was used to study the effect of nonheme iron on myoglobin oxidation at pH 5.6 and 7.2 23 °C. The addition ferrous significantly (p < 0.05) increased rate in absence lipid, demonstrating that promoted independent lipid oxidation. type II, chelating antioxidants sodium tripolyphosphate (at 7.2) or milk mineral 5.6) negated added iron, slowing myoglobin. clear concentration dependence seen for iron-stimulated oxidation, based both spectral visual evidence. Further investigation...
ABSTRACT: This study compared myoglobin (Mb) oxidation in lipid‐free model systems containing iron and Type I (radical quenching) or II (metal chelating) antioxidants. Oxidation was measured as loss of oxymyoglobin (MbO 2 ) during 0 to 24 h holding at 22 °C. Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) demonstrated iron‐binding ability all concentrations tested (88% 21% added bound 1 0.05 mg/mL, respectively). Iron chelation observed for phytic acid only the highest concentration (9.5% mg/mL phytate)....
Anthocyanins from black bean canning wastewater were isolated and purified on a laboratory scale by column chromatography, then identified high performance liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. Dynamic adsorption desorption performed in glass columns packed with Sepabead Sp700 to optimize the purification process. Different temperatures during (25℃and 35℃) did not significantly affect ratio. The ratio was reduced when flow rate increased 1.5 mL/min 2.5 mL/min. However,...
