Schizophrenia is often accompanied by a range of visual perception deficits, with many involving impairments in motion perception. The presence perceptual abnormalities may impair neural processes that depend on normal analysis, which turn affect overall functioning dynamic environments. Here, we examine the integrity suppressive center-surround mechanisms schizophrenic patients. Center-surround suppression has been implicated functions, including figure–ground segregation and pursuit eye...
Background Anomalous visual perception is a common feature of schizophrenia plausibly associated with impaired social cognition that, in turn, could affect behavior. Past research suggests impairment biological motion schizophrenia. Behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments were conducted to verify the existence this impairment, clarify its perceptual basis, identify accompanying neural concomitants those deficits. Methodology/Findings In Experiment 1, we...
Schizophrenia patients exhibit deficient processing of perceptual and cognitive information. However, it is not well-understood how basic deficits contribute to higher level problems in this mental disorder. Perception biological motion, a motion-based recognition task, relies on both visual motion social processing, thus providing useful paradigm evaluate the potentially hierarchical relationship between these two levels information processing. In study, we designed which signals were...
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with a variety of well-documented cognitive deficits such as in memory and executive functioning, but little known about basic perceptual concomitants OCD. This study investigated global, configural processing OCD using dynamic (moving) static stimuli minimal demands on function. Twenty patients 16 age- education-matched healthy control subjects were tested four tasks: two motion tasks involved detection discrimination human activity...
Perceptual salience improves the encoding of information into visual working memory (WM). However, factors that contribute to this facilitation effect are not well understood. This study tested influence target familiarity on WM encoding. In each trial, participants were presented with either one or three targets and asked encode their locations WM. Experiment 1, was manipulated by presenting an upright (familiar target) upside-down (unfamiliar/novel A. Increasing novelty led improved...
It has been reported that visual perception can be influenced not only by the physical features of a stimulus but also emotional valence stimulus, even without explicit emotion recognition. Some previous studies an anger superiority effect while others found happiness during perception. thus remains unclear as to which is more influential. In present study, we conducted two experiments using biological motion (BM) stimuli examine whether would affect BM perception; and if so, specific type...
While much is known about the role of prefrontal cortex (PFC) in working memory (WM) deficits schizophrenia, nature relationship between cognitive components WM and brain activation patterns remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate neural correlates maintenance component verbal by examining correct error trials with event-related fMRI.Twelve schizophrenia patients (SZ) thirteen healthy control participants (CO) performed a phonological delayed-matching-to-sample-task which set three nonsense...
AbstractIntroductionAlthough working memory (WM) impairments are well documented in schizophrenic patients (PSZ), the underlying mechanisms poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate role target salience during encoding determine whether impaired visual attention PSZ leads poor WM.MethodsThirty-one and 28 demographically matched healthy controls (HC) performed a spatial delayed-response task. Attentional demands were manipulated WM by presenting high salient (novel) or low...
Exploration of the ability to process socially relevant events portrayed by biological motion and identify underlying neuronal processes can provide clues for understanding pathophysiology psychosis. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) have pervasive interpersonal deficits odd behaviors. An neural mechanisms involved in perception relation activity clinical symptoms those is needed. To investigate specificity brain regions responsive individuals SPD compared healthy...
Abstract Schizophrenia is associated with the inability to control and coordinate thoughts, actions, perceptions. In conventional assessments of cognitive control, multiple sensory features stimuli are concomitantly manipulated, introducing a confounding role bottom-up perceptual information. To overcome this difficulty, we used an ambiguous visual stimulus (Necker cube), which allowed measurement constant input. Subjects (20 patients, 20 controls) were asked their perception transparent...
Abstract Foveated rendering (FR) technology is designed to improve the efficiency of graphical processes. In rendering, individualized approaches can help balance users’ experiences visual quality and saving computational resource. However, previous studies have not rigorously examined it related with FR techniques. To address this issue, we developed an (IFR) method using different central vision sizes peripheral resolutions across individuals in virtual reality. three user 88 participants...
Emotion detection using features presented in the body has been comparatively understudied compared to other emotional modalities. This study investigated and how emotions are revealed through bodily sensations movement information. We propose a novel visualization method for addressing part activation or deactivation associated with different motion capture data (bodily maps; BMMs) aim compare its existing methods of sensation towards computerised self-report BSMs). A user is conducted...
Embodiment through a virtual avatar is key element for people to feel that they are in the world. This study aimed elucidate interaction between 2 methods of eliciting embodiment avatar: motion synchronization and appearance similarity human avatar, understand (agency, body ownership, self-location) subjective experience (presence, simulator sickness, emotion) reality.Using full-body capture system, 24 participants experienced their avatars with 3D-scanned face size-matched from first-person...
Abstract Although context-processing deficits may be core features of schizophrenia, context remains a poorly defined concept. To test Phillips & Silverstein's model, we need to operationalize more precisely. We offer several useful ways framing and discuss enhancing or facilitating schizophrenic patients' performance under different contextual situations. Furthermore, creativity byproduct cognitive uncoordination.
Objective The functional strategic mechanisms in the brain during performing visuospatial working memory tasks, especially tasks with heavy load, are controversial. We conducted magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while sixteen subjects were face- and location-matching n-back to examine causal relations within frontoparietal networks. Methods applied a sophisticated method, structural equation modeling (SEM), fMRI data. data analyzed by extracting task-related eigenseries using principal...
Studies of biological motion perception often use stimuli depicting human actions portrayed via point-light (PL) displays. Typically, counterpart, or control, for PL are created by spatially scrambling trajectories individual dots. Depending on the purpose study, however, this procedure may be inappropriate as a foil genuine animations, because spatial not only disrupts coherent activity but also eliminates pair-wise relationships among dots and, unless corrected, alters spread dot motions....
The morphological and laminar characteristics of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) medial interlaminar (MIN) domestic dog (Canis familiaris) were studied by three-dimensional computer reconstruction labeled retinal afferents following intraocular HRP injections. As previously reported, LGN consisted layers A, A1, C, C1, C2, C3. Layers C2 receive contralateral-eye inputs, A1 C1 ipsilateral inputs. MIN was found to have four orderly interdigitating layers; 1, 2, 3, 4, lateral. 1 3...
