Treatment delays affect breast cancer survival and constitute poor-quality care. Black patients experience more treatment delay, but the relationship of geography to these disparities is poorly understood.
Financial toxicity is a contributor to the psychosocial burden of cancer care. There no consensus measure financial toxicity; however, recent studies have adopted Comprehensive Score for Toxicity (COST). Despite its growing popularity, data on responsiveness change COST instrument are lacking. To address this gap in literature, we performed sequential mixed-methods study people with multiple myeloma.
To explore the ways in which multiple myeloma affects an individual's life modern treatment era.15 individuals with and 10 clinicians were recruited from two academic medical centers southeastern United States.Semistructured interviews conducted to effect of a diagnosis on individuals' lives. Transcribed analyzed using conventional content analysis. The following four themes emerged journey for those can be lifelong may require frequent visits oncologist and, potentially, many successive...
Structural racism (SR) is a potential driver of health disparities, but research quantifying its impacts on cancer outcomes has been limited. We aimed to develop multidimensional county-level SR measure and examine the association with breast (BC) treatment delays among Black White patients.
Abstract Purpose People living in rural areas experience greater health disparities than their nonrural counterparts, but little is known about the association between status and quality of life (QOL) non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) survivors. We compared self‐reported impact cancer NHL Methods This study a secondary analysis 566 survivors recruited from registries at 2 large academic medical centers 1 state. Standardized measures collected information on demographics clinical characteristics,...
Inequities in guideline-concordant treatment receipt contribute to worse survival Black patients with breast cancer. Inequity-reduction interventions (eg, navigation, bias training, tracking dashboards) can close such gaps. We simulated the population-level impact of statewide implementation inequity-reduction on racial cancer inequities North Carolina.
This study describes the prevalence and persistence of fatigue among a cohort long-term non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) survivors. Mailed surveys assessed quality-of-life including (SF-36) at baseline five years. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with across timepoints. More than one-quarter (27.7%) 555 NHL survivors reported clinically meaningful 18.7% persistent One-third (34.4%) worsening over time. Independent associations included female gender, less education, past...
Patients with blood cancer experience serious physical and emotional symptoms throughout their journey.Building on previous work, we aimed to develop an app designed help patients multiple myeloma chronic lymphocytic leukemia self-manage test it for acceptability preliminary efficacy. We developed our Blood Cancer Coach input from clinicians patients. Our 2-armed randomized controlled pilot trial recruited participants Duke Health nationally in partnerships the Association of Oncology Social...
Abstract Background The plasma cell disorders (PCDs), multiple myeloma (MM), and light-chain amyloidosis (AL) are disproportionately diseases of older adults, whose care may be complicated by frailty associated with advancing age. We sought to evaluate the prevalence functional deficits symptoms in a cohort persons PCDs associations demographic, disease-related, functional, psychosocial measures quality life (QoL). Patients Methods Adults were recruited into an observational registry...
Anticipating and making health care decisions about appropriate or preferred treatment around end-of-life are intellectually challenging emotionally distressing for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients, new interventions needed.
PURPOSE Multiple myeloma (MM) is a prevalent hematologic malignancy in older adults, who often experience physical disability, increased health care usage, and reduced treatment tolerance. Home (HH) services are frequently used by this group, but the relationship between HH use, MM receipt unclear. This study examines connections receipt, survival outcomes adults with newly diagnosed using nationwide data set. METHODS The SEER-Medicare set was to identify aged 66 years from 2010 2017, year...
6549 Background: While we have seen impressive improvements in breast cancer (BC) survival over the last few decades, substantial racial disparities persist. Inequities receipt of guideline-concordant treatment contribute to worse Black BC patients. Previous studies shown that patient-level disparity reduction interventions (e.g., patient navigation) can significantly increase among patients, with positive spillover effects nonBlack The aim this study was estimate potential impact on...
e18770 Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) disproportionately affects older adults, among whom aging-related impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs) are common. We aimed to evaluate the association between functional disability and receipt therapy a population MM patients who had received home health (HH) services year prior diagnosis. Methods: identified cohort adults age ≥66 diagnosed with from 2010-2017 HH diagnosis Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) database linked...

145 Background: We have previously identified racial disparities in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment initiation within 12 months of diagnosis. Black MM patients (60.6%) were significantly less likely to initiate than White (69.5%). This current study aimed explore the extent which Black/White (B/W) explained by differences distribution demographic and health characteristics. Methods: adults (66+) diagnosed with 2007 2017 linked SEER-Medicare data. Patients required continuous Medicare Parts A...
172 Background: Structural racism (SR) refers to interactive systems of discrimination that perpetuate advantage for one racial group over others. Single-variable SR measures, such as residential segregation and historical red-lining, are associated with cancer disparities but do not represent all aspects SR. We aimed develop a composite measure research examine the association county-level in mortality. Methods: Adapting methods from obesity public safety research, we developed score (SRCS)...
160 Background: Inequities in the receipt of guideline-concordant treatment contribute to worse survival Black breast cancer (BCa) patients. Inequity reduction interventions (e.g., navigation, bias training, and real-time tracking) may close such gaps. However, evidence date has been derived from small-scale interventional studies, potential impact these on population-level disparities is unclear. The aim this study was simulate effect implementing inequity observed racial inequities...
