Mangroves are transitional coastal ecosystems in tropical and sub-tropical regions represent biologically important productive ecosystems. Despite their great ecological economic importance, mangroves often situated areas of high anthropogenic influence, being exposed to pollutants, such as those released by oil spills.A microcosm experiment was conducted, which simulated an spill previously pristine mangrove sediment. The effect the on extant microbial community studied using direct...
We found an extraordinary level of bacterial biodiversity in the tree leaf canopy a tropical Atlantic forest by using culture-independent molecular methods. Our survey suggests that each species selects for distinct microbial community. Analysis 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences revealed about 97% bacteria were unknown and phyllosphere any one carries at least 95 to 671 species. The canopies forests likely represent large reservoir unexplored diversity.
To investigate the bacterial diversity, antimicrobial resistance patterns and types of beta-lactamase genes in Gram-negative bacteria isolated from a hospital sewage treatment plant.Between July December 2008, we collected samples influent, clarifier tank effluent chlorine contact plant service located city Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Of 221 isolates identified, 40% were characterized as extended-spectrum (ESBL) producers. Nonpathogenic micro-organisms some pathogenic genera quantified. The most...
Upwelling systems are characterised by an intense primary biomass production in the surface (warmest) water after outcrop of bottom (coldest) water, which is rich nutrients. Although it known that microbial assemblage plays important role food chain marine and upwelling occur southwest Brazil drive complex dynamics chain, little about composition present this region. We carried out a molecular survey based on SSU rRNA gene from three domains phylogenetic tree life tropical region (Arraial do...
Microeukaryotes are an effective indicator of the presence environmental contaminants. However, characterisation these organisms by conventional tools is often inefficient, and recent molecular studies have revealed a great diversity microeukaryotes. The full extent this unknown, therefore, distribution, ecological role responses to anthropogenic effects microeukaryotes rather obscure. majority oil from oceanic spills (e.g., May 2010 accident in Gulf Mexico) converges on coastal ecosystems...
Triatomine bugs are the vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, agent Chagas disease. Vector control has for decades relied upon insecticide spraying, but resistance recently emerged in several triatomine populations. One alternative strategy to reduce T. cruzi transmission is paratransgenesis, whereby symbiotic bacteria genetically engineered produce cruzi-killing proteins vector's gut. This approach requires in-depth knowledge vectors' natural gut microbiota. Here, we use metagenomics (16S rRNA 454...
Abstract The bioremediation of Antarctic soils is a challenge due to the harsh conditions found in this environment. To characterize better effect total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations on bacterial, archaeal and microeukaryotic communities low (LC) high (HC) hydrocarbon-contaminated soil samples from Maritime clone libraries (small-subunit rRNA genes) were constructed. results showed that concentration hydrocarbons resulted decrease bacterial eukaryotic diversity; however, no TPH...
Abstract Soil samples from a transect low to highly hydrocarbon‐contaminated soils were collected around the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF), located at King George Island, Antarctica. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA genes, gene (iTag), and shotgun metagenomic sequencing used characterize microbial community structure potential for petroleum degradation by indigenous microbes. Hydrocarbon contamination did not affect abundance in EACF (bacterial...
ProtozoaDB (http://www.biowebdb.org/protozoadb) is being developed to initially host both genomics and post-genomics data from Plasmodium falciparum, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma brucei, T. cruzi Leishmania major, but will hopefully other protozoan species as more genomes are sequenced. It based on the Genomics Unified Schema offers a modern Web-based interface for user-friendly visualization exploration. This database not intended duplicate similar efforts such GeneDB, PlasmoDB,...
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi make up an important ecological niche in ecosystems, and knowledge of their diversity extreme environments is still incipient. The objective this work was to evaluate the density arbuscular soil King George Island South Shetland Islands archipelago, Antarctica. For that, roots Deschampsia antarctica were collected at brazilian research station spore density, species colonization evaluated. There a low spores (27.4 ± 17.7) root (6 5.1%), which did not present...
Upwelling systems contain a high diversity of pelagic microorganisms and their composition activity are defined by factors like temperature nutrient concentration. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique was used to verify the spatial temporal genetic variability Bacteria Archaea in two stations Arraial do Cabo coastal region, one under upwelling pressure another anthropogenic pressure. In addition, biotic abiotic variables were measured surface deep waters from three other...
Marine environments harbor a wide range of microorganisms from the three domains life. These have great potential to enable discovery new enzymes and bioactive compounds for industrial use. However, only ~1% environment can currently be identified through cultured isolates, limiting compounds. To overcome this limitation, metagenomics approach has been widely adopted biodiversity studies on samples marine environments. In study, we screened metagenomes in order estimate natural compound...
The composting process is an alternative for recycling organic waste, facilitated by microorganisms that produce compost or fertilizer in the presence of oxygen. resulting can be used as fertilizer, significantly improving soil structure. “Composta UFMS” project aims to environmentally manage solid waste generated on UFMS University City campus Campo Grande. Currently, dry leaves, pruning and weeding residues, wood shaving from vivarium, Restaurant are being directed composting. In addition...
Antarctic soils are under constant risks of oil contamination due the presence scienti c stations.Bioremediation is best choice for their recovery. However, before taking initiative, it important to test e ect on hydrocarbon depletion and microorganisms.Furthermore, search degraders bioindicators monitoring. Our studies showed that low concentration N may be causing recalcitrance hydrocarbons in soil.e microbial characterization revealed alteration structure diversity communities...
