It was first suggested that terahertz imaging has the potential to detect skin cancer twenty years ago. Since then, THz instrumentation improved significantly: real time broadband is now possible and robust protocols for measuring living subjects have been developed. Here, we discuss progress made as well highlight remaining challenges applying detection.

Scarring/Opacity on the surface of eye and vascularisation following infectious diseases, inflammation corneal trauma are often a leading cause blindness. The 'gold standard' treatment to prevent scarring is application amniotic membrane (AM) ocular in acute stage injury. Although clinically effective, use AM associated with biological variability unpredictable responses. Potential health risks including disease transmission, significant ethical issues surrounding tissue donation process...

This study introduces a handheld terahertz (THz) scanner designed to quantitatively evaluate human skin hydration levels and thickness. device, through the incorporation of force sensors, demonstrates enhanced repeatability accuracy over traditional fixed THz systems. The was evaluated in largest date, assessing 314 volunteers, successfully differentiating between individuals with dry hydrated using numerical stratified model. measures displays dynamics within quarter second, indicating its...

The Birmingham Burn Centre has continued to publish mortality data over the last 65 years. It is one of longest running cross-sectional cohort studies in world. We present latest from study, with a comparison previous results. Results decade failed show any improvement despite perceived advances burn care. aim this update was establish current statistics and ascertain whether had now been made.Data were collected for 10-year period on all burn-injured patients admitted (Birmingham Children's...

Pierre Robin sequence results from a cascade of events that occur during embryologic development and frequently presents with cleft palate. Some studies have shown speech outcomes to be worse in patients after palate repair.A cohort who all required an airway intervention nasogastric feeding the neonatal period were identified assessed at 5 years age. A cleft- sex-matched non-Pierre sequence, palate-only comparison group was also same institution study period.A total 24 nutritional support...

Abstract Terahertz (THz) light has the unique properties of being very sensitive to water, non-ionizing, and having sub-millimeter depth resolution, making it suitable for medical imaging. Skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis skin cancer affect a high percentage population we have been developing THz probe help with their diagnosis, treatment management. Our in vivo studies using handheld probe, but this prone positional errors through sensorimotor perturbations tremors, giving...

The first in vivo study of skin cancer patients using a handheld terahertz (THz) scanner is conducted clinical environment. By devising patient‐ normalized response function, it has been able to obtain clear difference between the THz measurements healthy and cancerous skin. However, due variety lesions locations measured, contrast not consistent more work needed understand mechanism. transient behavior also isolated during measurement, showing that surface compresses measurement....

We recently developed a bioresponsive dextrin-recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) conjugate as polymer therapeutic with potential for use in the promotion of tissue repair. The aim these studies was to patient-derived wound fluid and fibroblasts evaluate its further development treatment chronic wounds, such venous leg ulceration, growing clinical challenge aging population. First, levels EGF (ELISA assay), alpha-amylase elastase (enzyme assays) were measured acute fluid....

The average age at presentation was 46 months and there an equal distribution across sexes, although a male predominance in upper limb female lower limb. There were 20 cases macrodactyly 13 affecting Multiple digits more commonly affected than isolated digits, 2.5 affected. Static disease required significantly fewer operations progressive disease. need for repeated procedures must be highlighted In vast majority functional...

Thermal imaging detects infrared radiation from an object, producing a thermogram that can be interpreted as surrogate marker for cutaneous blood flow. To date, high-resolution cameras typically cost tens of thousands dollars. The FLIR ONE is smartphone-compatible miniature thermal camera currently retails at under $200. In proof-of-concept study, patients and healthy volunteers were assessed with (1) detecting mapping perforators, (2) defining perforasomes, (3) monitoring free flaps....
