An experimental analysis of voluntary, binary contributions for step-level public goods is presented. Independent information obtained on individual value orientation and expectations about the behaviour other subjects using incentive compatible mechanisms. The effects increasing payoffs good decreasing groupsize are investigated. Attention focused (1) determination expectations; (2) use when deciding behaviour; (3) differences in between individuals with different orientations.

We study whether gender influences credit attribution for group work using observational data and two experiments. use from academic economists to test coauthorship matters differently tenure men women. find that, conditional on quality other observables, are tenured similarly regardless of they coauthor or solo author. Women, however, less likely receive the more coauthor. then conduct experiments that demonstrate biases in settings without confounds exist. Taken together, our results best...

The artificiality of a laboratory situation is placed in the context tension between external and internal validity. Most economists consider validity to be most important. A proper evaluation ‘artificiality criticism’ (a lack validity) requires distinguishing various goals experimentalists pursue. External relatively more important for experiments searching empirical regularities than theory‐testing experiments. As experimental results are being used often development new theories,...

Many people incur costs to reward strangers who have been kind others. Theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that such "indirect rewarding" sustains cooperation between unrelated humans. Its emergence is surprising, because rewarders but receive no immediate benefits. It can prevail in the long run only if earn higher payoffs than "defectors" ignore strangers' kindness. We provide regarding received by individuals employ these other strategies, as punishment," imposing on unkind...

We experimentally study the impact of public opinion poll releases on voter turnout and welfare in a participation game. find higher overall rates when polls inform electorate about levels support for candidates than are prohibited. Distinguishing between allied floating voters, our data show that this increase is entirely due to voters. When indicate equal candidates, high low (compared situation without polls). In contrast, reveal more unequal support, lower with information, while effect...

Social norms involve observation by others and external sanctions for violations, whereas moral introspection internal sanctions. To study such their effects, we design a laboratory experiment. We examine dictator choices, where create shared understanding providing advice from peers with no financial payoff at stake. vary whether is given, as well choices are made public. This allows us to explicitly separate the effects of social norms. find that in fact affected combination observability...

Competition involves two main dimensions, a rivalry for resources and the ranking of relative performance. If socially recognized, latter yields in terms social status. The resulting from competitive incentives has been found to negatively affect women's performance that men. However, little is known about gender differences consequences social-status ranking. In our experiments we introduce novel design allows us isolate effects status those caused by resources. Subjects do time-limited...

Does competition affect moral behavior? This fundamental question has been debated among leading scholars for centuries, and more recently, it tested in experimental studies yielding a body of rather inconclusive empirical evidence. A potential source ambivalent results on the same hypothesis is design heterogeneity-variation true effect sizes across various reasonable research protocols. To provide further evidence whether affects behavior to examine generalizability single study...

Our findings suggest that employer‐side induce for larger sector. Subjective well‐being higher under while lower, at least extensive margin. We...

Automotive industry strives to reduce vehicle weight and therefore fuel consumption carbon dioxide emissions.
