Background. Single-dose albendazole and mebendazole show limited efficacy in the treatment of trichuriasis. The combination with ivermectin improves efficacy, but a mebendazole-ivermectin has not been previously investigated.
The Kato-Katz technique is widely used for the diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in epidemiological surveys and believed to be an inexpensive method. FLOTAC shows a higher sensitivity light-intensity helminth infections but reported more complex expensive. We assessed costs related collection, processing microscopic examination stool samples using techniques survey carried out Zanzibar, Tanzania. We measured time collection single specimen field, transfer laboratory, preparation...
We created a mobile phone microscope and assessed its accuracy for the diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminths compared with conventional microscopy. Mobile microscopy has sensitivity 69.4% detecting any helminth egg sensitivities 81.0%, 54.4%, 14.3% Ascaris lumbricoides , Trichuris trichiura hookworm respectively.
Infections with soil-transmitted helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura) are widespread often occur concomitantly. These parasitic-worm infections typically treated albendazole or mebendazole, but both drugs show low efficacy against T. trichiura. Albendazole is the drug of choice hookworm. In this double-blind trial conducted on Pemba Island, Tanzania, we randomly assigned children, 6 to 14 years age, receive one four treatments: oxantel pamoate at a dose 20 mg...

Importance
Clinical trial evidence used to support drug approval is typically the only information on benefits and harms that patients clinicians can use for decision-making when novel cancer therapies become available. Various evaluations have raised concern about uncertainty surrounding these data, a systematic investigation of available treatment outcomes drugs approved by US Food Drug Administration (FDA) warranted.
Objective
To describe clinical data at time FDA all...
Importance Numerous studies have shown that adherence to reporting guidelines is suboptimal. Objective To evaluate whether asking peer reviewers check if specific guideline items were adequately reported would improve in published articles. Design, Setting, and Participants Two parallel-group, superiority randomized trials performed using manuscripts submitted 7 biomedical journals (5 from the BMJ Publishing Group 2 Public Library of Science) as unit randomization, with allocated...
Smoking cessation is challenging, despite making use of established smoking therapies. Preclinical studies and one clinical pilot study suggest the antidiabetic drug glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue to modulate addictive behaviours nicotine craving. Previously, we reported short-term results a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Herein report long-term abstinence rates weight developments after 24 52 weeks.
Background Sensitive diagnostic tools are required for an accurate assessment of prevalence and intensity helminth infections in areas undergoing regular deworming, monitoring anthelmintic drug efficacy. We compared the accuracy Kato-Katz FLOTAC techniques frame a efficacy trial. Methodology/Principal Findings Stool samples from 343 Zanzibari children were subjected to duplicate thick smears basic technique baseline screening early 2009. The showed higher sensitivity than method diagnosis...
An accurate diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminthiasis is important for individual patient management, drug efficacy evaluation and monitoring control programmes. The Kato-Katz technique the most widely used method detecting helminth eggs in faecal samples. However, detailed analyses quality control, including false-positive egg count (FEC) estimates, have received little attention. Over a 3-year period, within frame series randomised controlled trials conducted Pemba, United Republic...
Background The currently used anthelmintic drugs, in single oral application, have low efficacy against Trichuris trichiura infection, and hence novel drugs are needed. Nitazoxanide has been suggested as potential drug candidate. Methodology safety of a dose nitazoxanide (1,000 mg), or albendazole (400 nitazoxanide-albendazole combination mg–400 with each administered separately on two consecutive days, were assessed double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial schools Pemba, Tanzania....
Abstract Background Pathogenic intestinal protozoa infections are common in school-aged children the developing world and they frequently associated with malabsorption syndromes gastrointestinal morbidity. Since diagnosis of these parasites is difficult, prevalence data on scarce. Methods We collected two stool samples from Pemba Island, Tanzania, as part a randomized controlled trial before 3 weeks after treatment (i) single-dose albendazole (400 mg); (ii) nitazoxanide (1,000 (iii)...
