By using commercial insurance claims data, we estimated that Lyme disease was diagnosed and treated in ≈476,000 patients the United States annually during 2010-2018. Our results underscore need for accurate diagnosis improved prevention.

National surveillance provides important information about Lyme disease (LD) but is subject to underreporting and variations in practice. Information limited the national epidemiology of LD from other sources. Retrospective analysis a nationwide health insurance claims database identified patients 2005-2010 with clinician-diagnosed using International Classification Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification, codes antimicrobial drug prescriptions. Of 103,647,966 person-years, 985...

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, potentially fatal disorder characterized by fever, pancytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and increased serum ferritin. HLH being increasingly reported as complication of dengue, common tropical acute febrile illness. After cluster pediatric dengue-associated patients was identified during the 2012-2013 dengue epidemic in Puerto Rico, active surveillance case-control investigation conducted at four referral hospitals to determine incidence...

Mosquito-transmitted viruses such as dengue are a global and growing public health challenge. Without widely available vaccines, mosquito control is the primary tool for fighting spread of these viruses. New technologies needed to complement existing methods, given current challenges with scalability, acceptability, effectiveness. A field trial was conducted in collaboration Communities Organized Prevent Arboviruses project Ponce, Puerto Rico, measure entomological epidemiological effects...

The representativeness and timeliness of sentinel surveillance for endemic emerging arboviral respiratory diseases in low-resource settings are understudied. We compared laboratory-confirmed epidemic dengue, non-epidemic Zika, chikungunya, COVID-19 (pre-Omicron Omicron periods) cases reported Puerto Rico's Sentinel Enhanced Dengue Surveillance System (SEDSS) with island-wide trends by the Department Health's passive disease system (PADSS). plotted over time to assess used lagged...

Abstract In 2016, four clusters of local mosquitoborne Zika virus transmission were identified in Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA, generating “red zones” (areas into which pregnant women advised against traveling). The County Mosquito Control Division initiated intensive control activities, including property inspections, community education, and handheld sprayer applications larvicides adulticides. For the first time, used a combination areawide ultralow-volume adulticide low-volume...

Dengue is a growing public health threat, causing approximately 400 million infections annually. In June 2021, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended first dengue vaccine (CYD-TDV) for children aged 9-16 years with previous infection, living in endemic areas, such as Puerto Rico (PR). As COVID-19 pandemic affected intention worldwide, we assessed before (pre-COVID) and after (post-COVID) availability among participants enrolled Communities Organized to Prevent...

Abstract Background We evaluated clinical and laboratory findings among patients with nonsevere or severe dengue in Puerto Rico to examine whether manifestations vary by age. Methods During 2012–2014, we enrolled who arrived at the emergency department fever history of within 7 days presentation. Serum samples were tested for virus (DENV) reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Severe was defined as plasma leakage shock,...
