A tunable photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coupler, which couples part of the optical power in one PCF with that another PCF, has been made by side polishing. We fabricated coupler mating two side-polished PCFs. achieved evanescent field coupling between core modes PCFs using polishing to bring cores close each other. By adjusting angle we obtained as much 90% tunability ratio. The spectrum ratio was almost flat, small ripples, over a 400-nm wavelength range.

This paper reports a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor based on side-polished single-mode fiber coated with palladium (Pd) thin film whose optical characteristics change as it absorbs hydrogen.
