関東地方の中新統の地質,層序,岩相,層厚変化,堆積様式,変形等に基づく層序・構造モデルを構築し,その視点に立脚して関東平野西部の反射法地震探査断面(朝霞-鴻巣-邑楽測線)の地質学的解釈を試みた.関東地方の中新統~鮮新統は庭谷不整合を境に"N.8期堆積層"(16.5~15 Ma)と"post N.8期堆積層"(15 Ma~)の堆積ユニットに大別される.前者はハーフグラーベン埋積堆積物の有無により層厚が側方に変化し,基盤の起伏の主要な要因となっている.一方,後者は下位層をほぼ一様に被覆するが,利根川中流低地帯の地下では海退に伴うデルタ堆積物が厚く伏在する.関東平野の基盤構造は,中新世(N.8期末)に形成されたハーフグラーベンにより非対称な起伏が形成されている.吉見丘陵に先中新統基盤岩類(吉見変成岩類)が露出しているのは,日本海拡大時に吉見地域がハーフグラーベンを形成した傾動ブロックの非沈降部に位置していたためであると考えられる.

A paleomagnetic study was conducted for well-dated volcanic rocks from the Middle Miocene Nijo Group in Mt. area, southwest (SW) Japan. Samples were collected 33 sites. Detailed stepwise demagnetization with both alternating-field and thermal techniques revealed well-determined site-mean directions 29 Tilt correction applicable to 13 sites, yielding an overall mean direction of D=352.2°, I=51.7°, α95=7.4° a pole at 84.3°N, 35.5°E, A95=8.5°. 群馬県富岡地域に分布する海成中新統において, これまで複数の研究者により別個に報告されてきた浮遊性有孔虫化石について, 試料の採取地点をもとにそれぞれの層位関係を整理し, 年代層序学的に重要な有孔虫化石種の産出リストを作成した. また, 他のタクサについても, 年代学的に重要な種の産出層準を整理した. これらの浮遊性微化石層序とともに, 海成層に挟在する凝灰岩について測定された各種放射年代値に基づいて, 富岡地域の海成中新統の年代層序を総括した. 野外調査に基づいて従来の層序区分 (大石・高橋,1990) に若干の修正を加え, また庭谷不整合が観察される露頭の詳細を報告した. 庭谷不整合より下位層を富岡層群と再定義し, 不整合より上位の地層は安中層群として定義した.
