Summary Cocoa is an important agricultural product that plays a crucial role in local communities South America. In Brazil, it traditionally grown agroforestry systems, which are more sustainable and contribute to biodiversity conservation. However, the recent expansion of intensive monocultures tropical forests poses significant threats this activity. Using historical data on land use cocoa productivity at municipality level from Brazil’s primary cocoa-producing states, we show maintaining...

Brazil has the highest biodiversity of native stingless bees in world. However, Brazilian regulations are based on protocols standardized by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which uses Apis mellifera as a model organism. The safety use an exotic species substitute is problem that concerns members academy government agencies responsible studies this nature neotropical regions where there occurrences bee species. Regarding exposure larvae to pesticides, several...

Wing geometric morphometrics has been applied to honey bees (Apis mellifera) in identification of evolutionary lineages or subspecies and, a lesser extent, assessing genetic structure within subspecies. Due bias the production sterile females (workers) colony, most studies have used workers leaving males (drones) as neglected group. However, considering their importance reproductive individuals, use drones should be incorporated these analyses order better understand diversity patterns and...

Abstract Determining bee flight capacity is crucial for developing management strategies conservation and/or crop pollination and purposes. In this study, we determined the distance of stingless Melipona fasciculata using radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology. For this, conducted two translocation experiments workers equipped with RFID microsensors: (1) release bees at seven distances between 100 3000 m from experimental colonies in Belém, Brazil, (2) six 1500 10,000 Carajás...

Differences in the timing of exoskeleton melanization and sclerotization are evident when comparing eusocial solitary bees. This cuticular maturation heterochrony may be associated with life style, considering that bees remain protected inside nest for many days after emergence, while immediately start outside activities. To address this issue, we characterized gene expression using large-scale RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), quantified hydrocarbon (CHC) through gas chromatography-mass...

Abstract Bee flight capacity determines the area that a colony can exploit, and this knowledge is essential to formulate management conservation strategies for each species. In study, we evaluated of Melipona seminigra using radio frequency identification (RFID). Three questions were addressed: Do RFID tags affect M. workers? What effect landscape on foraging activity? Does time since was re-established range foragers? Our results indicate tag used does not ability . Bees marked with...

Identifying and classifying species of stingless Neotropical bees is not a trivial task requires the help taxonomists substantial study training time. Also, there lack taxonomically useful characters to differentiate among megadiverse group bees, recognize variation. Based on that, we have been testing alternatives character-based, efficient taxonomic determination herein performed exploratory analyses wing shape variation using geometric morphometrics. Thus, built data set photographs right...

Tropical dry forests are increasingly threatened by human activities. In Northeast Brazil, the Caatinga, an area of tropical surrounded wetlands, is considered globally unique among these habitats. this region, stingless bee Plebeia flavocincta found in a variety environmental, ecological, and demographic conditions.
