The Imaging Beamline (IBL) P05 is operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and located at DESY storage ring PETRA III. IBL dedicated to X-ray full field imaging consists of two experimental end stations. A micro tomography station equipped for spatial resolutions down 1 µm a nano 100 nm. in user operation since 2013 offers with absorption contrast, phase enhanced contrast methods. We report here on current status developments including technical descriptions show examples research performed P05.
Abstract To advance microfluidic integration, we present the use of two-photon additive manufacturing to fold 2D channel layouts into compact free-form 3D fluidic circuits with nanometer precision. We demonstrate this technique by tailoring nozzles and mixers for time-resolved structural biology at X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). achieve submicron jets speeds exceeding 160 m s −1 , which allows megahertz XFEL repetition rates. By integrating an additional orifice, implement a low...
Abstract Serial femtosecond crystallography requires reliable and efficient delivery of fresh crystals across the beam an X-ray free-electron laser over course experiment. We introduce a double-flow focusing nozzle to meet this challenge, with significantly reduced sample consumption, while improving jet stability previous generations nozzles. demonstrate its use determine first room-temperature structure RNA polymerase II at high resolution, revealing new structural details. Moreover,...
Dicynodontia represent the most diverse tetrapod group during Late Permian. They survived Permo-Triassic extinction and are central to understanding terrestrial ecosystems. Although extensively studied, several aspects of dicynodont paleobiology such as, neuroanatomy, inner ear morphology internal cranial anatomy remain obscure. Here we describe a new (Therapsida, Anomodontia) from northern Mozambique: Niassodon mfumukasi gen. et sp. nov. The holotype ML1620 was collected Permian K5...

Reliable sample delivery is essential to biological imaging using X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). Continuous injection the Gas Dynamic Virtual Nozzle (GDVN) has proven valuable, particularly for time-resolved studies. However, many important aspects of GDVN functionality have yet be thoroughly understood and/or refined due fabrication limitations. We report application 2-photon polymerization as a form high-resolution 3D printing fabricate high-fidelity GDVNs with submicron resolution....
An intrinsic knowledge gap between current understandings obtained experimentally and the underlying working or degradation mechanisms of rechargeable lithium batteries still remains, giving direct rise to application challenges, e.g., safety issues, predicaments in identifying performance-aging factors dilemmas guiding further research directions. Against this background, non-destructive three-dimensional (synchrotron) X-ray tomography that guarantees a visual access inner electrodes has...
The imaging beamline (IBL/P05) operated by Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) at the DESY PETRA III storage ring consists of two experimental stations: A micro tomography and a nano end station. Here an overview setups data acquisition will be given. In addition some first results out wide range applications using station P05 shown. Furthermore, we present These were obtained with x–ray microscopy setup, which currently operates energies 17.4 30 keV polymer compound refractive lenses (CRLs)...
Serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) using X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs) allows for room temperature protein structure determination without evidence of conventional radiation damage. In this method, a liquid suspension microcrystals can be delivered to the beam in vacuum as micro-jet, which replenishes crystals at rate that exceeds current XFEL pulse repetition rate. Gas dynamic virtual nozzles produce required micrometer-sized streams by focusing action coaxial sheath gas and have...
Hot tears can arise during the late part of alloy solidification because shrinkage isolated liquid as it turns to solid and may have a catastrophic effect on cast tensile properties. Although there are correlations suggest hot tear sensitivity casting conditions, they do not capture influence microstructure tearing, such second-phase particles or intermetallic compounds (IMCs) commonly present in engineering alloys. We use situ X-ray radiography quantify formation growth behaviour Al-5Cu...
Abstract Rechargeable sodium–oxygen batteries (NaOBs) are receiving extensive research interests because of their advantages such as ultrahigh energy density and cost efficiency. However, the severe failure Na metal anodes has impeded commercial development NaOBs. Herein, combining in situ synchrotron X‐ray computed tomography (SXCT) other complementary characterizations, a novel electro‐chemo‐mechanical mechanism sodium anode NaOBs is elucidated. It visually showcased that involve...
Abstract Melt inclusions are small parcels of magma trapped in crystals, which hold key information about preeruptive magmatic conditions including volatile content and melt chemistry. We focus here on for a nuanced view the pre-eruptive state Colli Albani, mafic-alkaline ignimbrite forming system central Italy. Recent years have seen an increased amount research surrounding feasibility using as tracers including, namely concern measuring CO2 present vapour bubbles. Here we synchrotron 3D...
The Imaging Beamline (IBL) operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) at newly refurbished DESY PETRA III storage ring is dedicated to radiography and tomography provides two experimental endstations, one for micro nano tomography. technical specifications aim 3D imaging with a spatial resolution of below 100 nm. This nanometer will be achieved using different combinations compound refractive lenses as X-ray optics. In addition, microscopic optic magnifying images after converting in...
Abstract Human-based segmentation of tomographic images can be a tedious time-consuming task. Deep learning algorithms and, particularly, convolutional neural networks have become state the art techniques for pattern recognition in digital that replace human-based image segmentation. However, their use materials science is beginning to explored and application needs adapted specific this field. In present work, network trained segment microstructural components an Al-Si cast alloy imaged...

The unique beam characteristics of PETRA III at DESY promote novel applications for many scientific fields, including imaging applications. For tomography these are techniques like high-speed and in-situ measurements marked by highest density resolutions spatial down to the nanometer range. Furthermore, high coherence enables phase contrast in an exceptional way. Therefore, Imaging Beamline IBL is equipped with two dedicated endstations, one micro nano tomography. In addition, a very...
The relic silverfish Tricholepidion gertschi is the sole extant representative of family Lepidotrichidae. Its phylogenetic position special interest, since it may provide crucial insights into early phenotypic evolution dicondylian insects. However, T. unclear. Originally, was classified among (Zygentoma), but various alternative relationships within Zygentoma as well a sistergroup relationship to all remaining + Pterygota are discussed, latter implying paraphyly with respect Pterygota....
