First-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and lattice dynamics for new superconductor MgB (2) are carried out found to be in excellent agreement with our inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The numerical results reveal that E(2g) in-plane boron phonons near zone center very anharmonic strongly coupled planar B sigma bands Fermi level. This giant anharmonicity nonlinear electron-phonon coupling is key quantitatively explaining observed high T(c) isotope effect (2).
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) can cause major morbidity despite standard of care (SOC; rifaximin/lactulose). Fecal microbial transplant (FMT) enemas postantibiotics are safe, but the effect FMT without antibiotics using capsular route requires investigation. The aim this work was to determine safety, tolerability, and impact on mucosal/stool microbiota brain function in HE after a randomized, single‐blind, placebo‐controlled clinical trial Virginia. Patients with cirrhosis recurrent MELD...
All fluorochemicals—including elemental fluorine and nucleophilic, electrophilic, radical fluorinating reagents—are prepared from hydrogen fluoride (HF). This highly toxic corrosive gas is produced by the reaction of acid-grade fluorspar (>97% CaF 2 ) with sulfuric acid under harsh conditions. The use to produce fluorochemicals via a process that bypasses HF desirable but remains an unsolved problem because prohibitive insolubility . Inspired calcium phosphate biomineralization, we herein...
The capability of sodium hydride as a reducing agent in oxide deintercalation reactions is explored. Ni(III) perovskite LaNiO3 can be reduced topotactically to LaNiO2, isostructural with the "infinite layer" cuprates, using solid sealed evacuated tube at 190 ≤ T/°C 210, and similar infinite-layer phase prepared by reduction NdNiO3. Structural characterization indicates coexistence incompletely regions, five-coordinate Ni centers due introduction anions between NiO23- sheets, giving samples...
We present the synthesis and structural characterisation of a transition metal oxide hydride, LaSrCoO_3H_{0.7}, which adopts an unprecedented structure in chains are bridged by hydride anions to form two- dimensional extended network. The centers strongly coupled their bonding with both ligands produce magnetic ordering up at least 350 K. synthetic route is sufficiently general allow prediction new class metal-containing electronic materials.
We have investigated the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and dielectric properties of polycrystalline CoCr$_2$O$_4$, an insulating spinel exhibiting both ferrimagnetic spiral magnetic structures. Below $T_c$ = 94 K sample develops long-range order, we attribute a sharp phase transition at $T_N$ $\approx$ 25 with onset order. Neutron measurements confirm that while structure remains cubic 80 11 K; there is complex ordering by K. Density functional theory supports view semiconductor...
Paneth cell dysfunction has been implicated in a subset of Crohn's disease (CD) patients. We previously stratified clinical outcomes CD patients by using phenotypes, which we defined the intracellular distribution antimicrobial proteins. Animal studies suggest that cells shape intestinal microbiome. However, it is unclear whether phenotypes alter microbiome complexity subjects. Therefore, analyzed correlation with mucosal composition and ileal RNA expression pediatric noninflammatory bowel...
A series of strontium vanadium oxide-hydride phases prepared by utilizing a low-temperature synthesis strategy in which oxide ions Sr(n+1)V(n)O(3n+1) (n=∞, 1, 2) are topochemically replaced hydride to form SrVO2H, Sr2VO3H, and Sr3V2O5H2, respectively. These new contain sheets or chains apex-linked V(3+)O4 squares stacked with SrH layers/chains, such that the n=∞ member, can be considered analogous "infinite-layer" phases, as Sr(1-x)Ca(x)CuO2 (the parent phase high-T(c) cuprate...
Transitioning to electrified transport requires improvements in sustainability, energy density, power lifetime, and approved the cost of lithium-ion batteries, with significant opportunities remaining development next-generation cathodes. This presents a highly complex, multiparameter optimization challenge, where developments cathode chemical design discovery, theoretical experimental understanding, structural morphological control, synthetic approaches, reduction strategies can deliver...
The synthesis and structural characterization of 15R-, 8H-, 6H'-, 10H-BaMnO3-x 9R-Ba0.875Sr0.125MnO3 is described. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal a strong preference for the location anion vacancies within face-shared hexagonal layers these phases. At high vacancy concentrations, Mn2O9-x dimer units become prevalent. Magnetic indicates antiferromagnetic order in all Ordering temperatures are range 250 K < T 270 show dependence on fraction cubic present stacking sequence.
Analysis of the structural parameters phases that adopt brownmillerite-type structures suggests distribution different complex ordering schemes adopted within this structure type can be rationalized by considering both size separation between tetrahedral layers and chain distortion angle. A systematic study using data obtained from La1−xAxMnO2,5 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca,) phases, prepared topotactic reduction analogous La1−xAxMnO3 perovskite was performed to investigate relationship. By manipulating...
While cation order–disorder transitions have been achieved in a wide range of materials and provide crucial effects various physical chemical properties, anion analogues are scarce. Here we expanded the number known lanthanide oxyhydrides, LnHO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), to include Ln Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, which has allowed observation an transition from anion-ordered fluorite structure (P4/nmm) for larger Ln3+ ions (La–Nd) disordered arrangement (Fm3̅m) smaller (Sm–Er). Structural analysis...
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) poses a serious threat in hospitals where they densely colonize the intestinal tracts of patients. In vulnerable hosts, these pathogens may translocate to bloodstream and become lethal. The ability selectively reduce VRE patients could potentially prevent many translocation events spread pathogen. Herein, we have engineered Escherichia. coli Nissle 1917 produce secrete three antimicrobial peptides, Enterocin A, B, Hiracin JM79, specifically target kill...
BACKGROUNDHepatic encephalopathy (HE) is associated with poor outcomes. A prior randomized, pilot trial demonstrated safety after oral capsular fecal microbial transplant (FMT) in HE, favorable changes composition and cognition. However, functional are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effect FMT on gut-brain axis compared placebo, using function based bile acids (BAs), inflammation (serum IL-6, LPS-binding protein [LBP]), their association EncephalApp.METHODSTwenty...
Alterations in gastrointestinal microbiota indirectly modulate the risk of atopic disease, but effects on respiratory viral infections are less clear. Using murine paramyxoviral virus type 1, Sendai (SeV), we examined effect altering pulmonary antiviral immune response. C57BL6 mice were treated with streptomycin before or during infection SeV and resulting response studied. Ingestion non-absorbable antibiotic led to a marked reduction intestinal microbial diversity without significant lung...
