In the orbitofrontal olfactory area (LPOF) which was delineated in a previous paper, capacity for odor discrimination studied and compared with that anterior pyriform cortex (AP), medial portion of amygdala (MA), bulb (OB). Unanesthetized monkeys were used eight odors applied. 1. OB, 12.5% cells responded to only one odor, five most numerous (25%). The total two, three, four 52%, less than responding four, (67.5%). A small number oc all (2.5%). responses classified as an increase (+type),...

An olfactory projection area was studied in monkeys anesthetized with Nembutal. 1. Evoked potentials were recorded when the bulb (OB) electrically stimulated lateroposterior portion of orbitofrontal cortex (LPOF). However, those disappeared anterior pyriform (AP) (probably together medial amygdala (MA)) aspirated or destroyed. 2. In nearly entire hypothalamic region, evoked by same stimulation OB. When region stimulated, LPOF. 3. The LPOF due to OB never even thalamus extensively destroyed...

Evoked potentials restricted to the magnocellular portion of mediodorsal nucleus (MDmc) thalamus were recorded after stimulation olfactory bulb (OB) and posterior orbital cortex frontal lobe (OFC). Potentials evoked by OB probably trans-synaptically elicited, while OFC a result antidromic activation. 2. The area in which could elicit MDmc was located centroposterior (CPOF). 1. In the rabbit olfactory bulb, intracellular potentials were recorded from mitral cells and neurones in granule cell layer (g.c.l.) following lateral tract (l.o.t.) stimulation. 2. Most recordings showed large (5-21 mV) prolonged (60-650 msec) i.p.s.p.s subseuqent to antidromic spikes. These decreased amplitude then reversed polarity by progressive increase hyperpolarizing current applied intracellularly. They accompanied a prominent long lasting (up 100 conductance of membrane. 3....

The low temperature magnetic properties of pyrochlore compound Dy2Ti2O7 in fields applied along the [111] direction are reported. Below 1 K, a clear plateau has been observed magnetization process field range 2~9 kOe, followed by sharp moment jump at around 10 kOe that corresponds to breaking spin ice state. We found state is disordered with residual entropy nearly half value zero-field state, whose macroscopic degeneracy comes from frustration spins on kagome layers perpendicular field.

Low temperature magnetization measurements on the pyrochlore spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 reveal that ice-rule breaking flip, appearing at H approximately 0.9 T applied parallel to [111] direction, turns into a novel first-order transition for T<0.36 K which is most probably of liquid-gas type. T-linear variation critical field observed down 0.03 suggests unusual situation entropy release across remains finite [approximately 0.5 (J/K) x mol-Dy] as T-->0, in accordance with macroscopic...

The evolutionary expansion of sensory neuron populations detecting important environmental cues is widespread, but functionally enigmatic. We investigated this phenomenon through comparison homologous olfactory pathways Drosophila melanogaster and its close relative sechellia, an extreme specialist for Morinda citrifolia noni fruit. D. sechellia has evolved species-specific expansions in select, noni-detecting (OSN) populations, multigenic changes. Activation inhibition defined proportions...

In magnetic nanoparticles, anisotropy energy has extra contributions compared to that of the bulk counterparts, being most relevant surface anisotropy. Here we use pressure separate core from in one system maghemite nanoparticles dispersed a polymer. The is Kcore=7.7×105 erg/cm3 while KS=4.2×10−2 erg/cm2. This in-one-sample separation possible due changes structurally ordered and disordered ratio, which induce average energy.
