Background: There is a strong need for laboratory in vitro test systems the toxicity of airborne particulate matter and nanoparticles. The measurement oxidative stress potential offers promising way forward. Objectives:Aworkshop was convened involving leading workers from field order to review available methods generate Consensus Statement. Discussions: Workshop participants summarised their own research activities as well discussion relative merits different methods. Conclusions: In have an...

In Salisbury, England, on 4 March 2018, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia collapsed were taken to the local hospital. While cause of their collapse was not immediately obvious it re...
One of the most critical challenges for high-performance computing (HPC) scientific visualization is execution on massively threaded processors. Of many fundamental changes we are seeing in HPC systems, one profound a reliance new processor types optimized bandwidth over latency hiding. Our current production software not designed these architectures. To address this issue, VTK-m framework serves as container algorithms, provides flexible data representation, and simplifies design algorithms...
We demonstrate an all-fiber supercontinuum source that generates a continuous spectrum from 1.6 μm to >11 with 417 mW on-time average power at 33% duty cycle. By utilizing master oscillator amplifier pump three amplification stages and concatenating solid core ZBLAN, arsenic sulfide, selenide fibers, we shift 1550 nm light ∼4.5 μm, ∼6.5 respectively. With 69 past 7.5 this provides both high broad spectral expansion, while outputting single fundamental mode.
A near-IR (775 nm) femtosecond laser has been used to directly write a 1 cm long optical waveguide in Nd-doped silicate glass. gain of 1.5 dB/cm was obtained at signal wavelength 1054 nm for ~346 mW 514 pump power, front the input coupling objective.

Sternal injury, gross cardiac pathology, and dysrhythmias following nonpenetrating impact by a variety of impactors to the sternum experimental animals are described. The biomechanical response chest wall associated transient pressure changes within heart presented, correlation between injury severity displacement is demonstrated. A simple model then developed predict if mass, velocity, dimensions an impactor known. demonstrates dependence chest-wall upon preimpact kinetic energy, diameter,...
OBJECTIVES In July 1995 the Soufriere Hills volcano on island of Montserrat began to erupt. Preliminary reports showed that ash contained a substantial respirable component and large percentage toxic silica polymorph, cristobalite. this study cytotoxicity three volcanic (MVA) samples was investigated: M1 from single explosive event, M2 accumulated predominantly derived pyroclastic flows, M3 flow. These were compared with relatively inert dust TiO 2 known quartz dust, DQ12. METHODS Surface...
Epidemiological studies of air pollution have shown associations between exposure to particles and dementia. The mechanism this is unclear. As these seem unlikely in terms the very small dose likely reach brain usual Western urban circumstances, we extend our 1995 hypothetical explanation association with cardiac deaths as a plausible alternative its Since original proposal, it has become apparent that inflammation may be carried by blood from organ biologic microparticles derived cell...
We generate a supercontinuum (SC) spectrum ranging from 1.57 μm to 12 (20 dB bandwidth) with soft glass fiber cascade consisting of ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF fiber, As2S3 and As2Se3 pumped by nanosecond thulium master oscillator power amplifier system. The highest on-time average generated is 417 mW at 33% duty cycle. observe near-diffraction-limit beam quality across the wavelength range 3 μm, even though multimode below μm. Our study also shows that parameters such as numerical aperture,...
Rapid developments in nano-technology are likely to confer significant benefits on mankind. But, as with perhaps all new technologies, these be accompanied by risks, risks. Nano-toxicology is developing parallel and seeks define the hazards risks associated nano-materials: only when have been identified they can controlled. This article discusses reasons for concern about potential effects health of exposure nano-materials relates evidence ambient aerosol. A number hypotheses proposed...
D. S., a white woman, aged 20, single, was admitted to the Mary Fletcher Hospital, Nov. 19, 1928, at 9 p. m., with diagnosis of ruptured ectopic pregnancy. While in store, November 17, patient seized severe abdominal pain, collapsed and had be assisted her home. The pain relieved she slept well that night. day admission up about but felt weak tired. About 5 while sitting chair, another attack again collapsed. A physician called, who sent hospital. Her past history unimportant, except for...
