Raman amplifiers are being deployed in almost every new long-haul and ultralong-haul fiber-optic transmission systems, making them one of the first widely commercialized nonlinear optical devices telecommunications. This paper reviews some technical reasons behind wide-spread acceptance technology. Distributed improve noise figure reduce penalty fiber allowing for longer amplifier spans, higher bit rates, closer channel spacing, operation near zero-dispersion wavelength. Lumped or discrete...
Attempts are made to study the seasonal climatology of Arabian Peninsula, including regional station level information for Saudi Arabia period 1979–2009. The wet (November April) and dry (June September) season rainfall temperature obtained from various data sources, namely, surface observations, CPC Merged Analysis Precipitation (CMAP), Climatic Research Unit (CRU) Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). These gridded datasets detect zone over Rub Al-Khali, world's largest sand desert,...
A mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) is generated in ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF...) fluoride fibers from amplified nanosecond laser diode pulses with a continuous spectrum ∼0.8 μm to beyond 4.5 μm. The SC has an average power of ∼23 mW, pump-to-SC conversion efficiency exceeding 50%, and spectral density ∼−20 dBm/nm over large fraction the spectrum. generation initiated by breakup into femtosecond through modulation instability, then broadened primarily fiber nonlinearities ∼2-7 m lengths...
We show experimentally the trapping of orthogonally polarized solitons in birefringent optical fibers with polarization dispersions as high 90 psec/km. Solitons along two axes a fiber compensate for dispersion by shifting their frequencies, and we observe frequency splitting up to 1.03 THz 80 For 20-m energy required is ~84 pJ, 76m reduces ~64 pJ.
A 2700 h life test of a single proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with Nafion 112 under nonsaturated humidification was conducted. In situ measurements hydrogen crossover rate through the and electrochemical active surface area (EAS) Pt catalyst, in combination polarization curves, were applied to investigate degradation mechanism. slow decrease EAS catalyst from 400 1900 running found cause slight voltage decay only at high current densities. However, subsequent dramatic results an...
With sufficient Raman gain to compensate exactly for net fiber energy loss, we have demonstrated distortionless propagation of 10-psec FWHM fundamental (N = 1) soliton pulses (lambda 1.56 microm) over a 10-km length single-mode fiber. The implications this experiment development an all-optical, high-bit-rate, long-distance telecommunications system are discussed briefly.
Abstract In Part I of this paper (Islam & Flink, 1982), the drying behaviour potato in a natural convection, solar dryer was discussed. A number factors were shown to influence ability complete process within 1 day. current paper, we report on another approach increase throughput. It is that osmotic concentration 45% sucrose/15% salt solution, prior drying, results two- five-fold product throughput, due moisture loss and solids uptake osmosis step higher, allowable, final contents for...
A novel, all-fiber-integrated supercontinuum (SC) laser is demonstrated and provides up to 10.5 W time-averaged power with a continuous spectrum from ~0.8 4 mum. The SC generated in combination of standard single-mode fibers ZrF 4 -BaF xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2 -LaF xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3 -AlF -NaF (ZBLAN) fluoride pumped by...
A novel GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum well structure, consisting of two 46 Å wells separated by a 11.5 barrier, was embedded in leaky waveguide. Polarization anisotropy and quantum-confined Stark effect absorption changes are observed, 14:1 modulator is demonstrated operating at the peak first light-hole transition. Although lowest energy transitions behave as predicted tunneling resonance calculations, higher states exhibit unusual behavior due to valence-band mixing.
A mid-IR supercontinuum (SC) fiber laser based on a thulium-doped amplifier (TDFA) is demonstrated. continuous spectrum extending from ∼1.9 to 4.5 μm generated with ∼0.7 W time-average power in wavelengths beyond 3.8 μm. The outputs total average of up ∼2.6 ∼8.5 m length ZrF4─BaF2─LaF3─AlF3─NaF (ZBLAN) fiber, an optical conversion efficiency ∼9% the TDFA pump SC. Optimal generating achieved by reducing losses stage and optimizing ZBLAN length. We demonstrate novel (to our knowledge) approach...

We measure the diffuse reflection spectrum of solid samples such as explosives (TNT, RDX, PETN), fertilizers (ammonium nitrate, urea), and paints (automotive military grade) at a stand-off distance 5 m using mid-infrared supercontinuum light source with 3.9 W average output power. The extends from 750-4300 nm, it is generated by nonlinear spectral broadening in 9 long fluoride fiber pumped high peak power pulses dual-stage erbium-ytterbium amplifier operating 1543 nm. are distinguished...
We demonstrate an all-fiber supercontinuum source that generates a continuous spectrum from 1.6 μm to >11 with 417 mW on-time average power at 33% duty cycle. By utilizing master oscillator amplifier pump three amplification stages and concatenating solid core ZBLAN, arsenic sulfide, selenide fibers, we shift 1550 nm light ∼4.5 μm, ∼6.5 respectively. With 69 past 7.5 this provides both high broad spectral expansion, while outputting single fundamental mode.
An experiment was conducted to assess the influence of coconut oil and beeswax coating modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) on postharvest storage quality lemon at ambient storage. Sorted lemons were washed with water; fruit surface water removed by using fan then coated mixture (90:10 or 80:20) only oil. After coating, kept open in crates MAP stored condition (21 ± 2 °C 50 5% RH). The effectiveness edible extending shelf life evaluated determining weight loss, respiration rate, ethylene...
