Bacterial vaginosis affects 15 to 50% of women reproductive age, and recurrence is common after treatment with an antibiotic agent. The high incidence suggests the need for new treatments prevent recurrent bacterial vaginosis.

Background. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) causes genital inflammation and increases HIV risk, whereas a vaginal microbiota dominated by Lactobacillus species is associated with immune quiescence relative protection. BV treatment reduces inflammation, but it unclear whether this reduction driven decrease in BV-associated bacteria or an increase species.

In Brief Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by lack of endogenous lactobacilli and overgrowth pathogens that frequently recurs following antibiotic treatment. Methods: A phase 2a study assessed colonization efficiency, safety, tolerability, acceptability Lactobacillus crispatus CTV-05 (LACTIN-V) administered applicator. Twenty-four women with BV were randomized in 3:1 ratio active product to placebo. Participants used LACTIN-V at 2 × 109 colony-forming...

Several fastidious bacteria have been associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), but their role in lactobacilli recolonization failure is unknown. We studied the effect of 7 BV-associated species and 2 Lactobacillus on vaginal colonization crispatus CTV-05 (LACTIN-V).Twenty-four women BV were given a 5-day course metronidazole gel then randomized 3:1 to receive either LACTIN-V or placebo applied vaginally once daily for 5 initial consecutive days, followed by weekly application over weeks....

ABSTRACT Vaginal colonization by fungi may elicit genital inflammation and enhance the risk of adverse reproductive health outcomes, such as HIV acquisition. Cross-sectional studies have linked with an absence bacterial vaginosis (BV), but it is unclear whether shifts in vaginal bacteria alter abundance fungi. swabs collected following topical metronidazole treatment for BV during phase 2b, placebo-controlled trial LACTIN-V, a Lactobacillus crispatus -based live biotherapeutic, were assayed...

Introduction Live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) containing Lactobacillus crispatus may optimize the vaginal microbiota, reduce genital inflammation, and protect against HIV acquisition. Determining acceptability of LBPs among African women at high risk is essential to guide product development. Methods The phase 2 double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial recruited young sexually active cis-women with dysbiosis from a community-based research clinic. Following antibiotics (oral...

Abstract Background Bacterial vaginosis (BV) increases HIV acquisition risk, potentially by eliciting genital inflammation. After BV treatment, the vaginal administration of LACTIN-V, a live biotherapeutic containing Lactobacillus crispatus strain CTV-05, reduced recurrence and inflammation; however, 3 months after product cessation, CTV-05 colonization was only sustained in 48% participants. Results This nested sub-study 32 participants receiving LACTIN-V finds that 72% (23/32) demonstrate...
