Abstract Introduction Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) and Near-Infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) are indirect measures of neurovascular coupling (NVC). NVC is the relationship between cerebral blood flow neuronal activity to meet metabolic demands brain. No studies have integrated TCD-NIRS investigate feasibility measuring in those with dementia, delirium, depression. Methods 32 participants (median [IQR] age 73.0 [70.0,78.5], 50% female, healthy (HC, n = 10), depression (n 11),...

Unilateral renal agenesis is an uncommon association with Kallmann's syndrome (KS) (hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism and olfactory defect). We have investigated affected individuals from six pedigrees: five X‐linked KS, one KS ichthyosis (XLI). Seventeen had imaging performed, scans demonstrated only kidney. In addition, two pedigrees males who died in the neonatal period bilateral agenesis. Only of four family (Pedigree 6) showed unilateral agenesis, despite all patients demonstrating...

SUMMARY In a study of 250 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease, seven (2.8%) were found to have polymyalgia rheumatica or giant cell arteritis. All cases occurred in female over the age 60 years, prevalence this group 9.3%. No either disorder seen control population 150 50 years attending cardiac clinic at same hospital. Awareness association may allow earlier diagnosis and treatment syndrome elderly disease.

SUMMARY As judged by the urinary excretion of free noradrenaline and adrenaline, secretion catecholamines is not increased in patients with Graves' disease. Catecholamine was reduced treatment propranolol or carbimazole singly combination. The possible mechanism hyperthyroidism responsible for apparent increase sympathetic nervous activity mitigation these features discussed.

SUMMARY Nine female patients with normal serum total thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) but elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were studied. Six had generalised oedema associated maximal diurnal weight gains in excess of 1.4 kg. Under conditions forced water diuresis, before during physiological replacement 1‐thyroxine, the supine transcapillary escape rate albumin (TERA) was measured, while venous colloid osmotic pressure (COP), packed cell volume (PCV) urinary exretion...

Abstract Aims To determine the nature of association between baseline albuminuria and risk all‐cause mortality cardiovascular disease, to if rate change from over 1 year predicts these endpoints in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Methods Cohort study 427 (161 Type 266 2) nephropathy defined as urinary albumin excretion (UAE) ≥ 30 mg/24 h at (mean age 53.4 years). Patients were recruited time referral a clinic followed up annually for an average 5 years. UAE was re‐measured calculated....

A clinical and investigative study is reported of 19 patients with ‘idiopathic oedema women’. The reasons for defining this as a specific syndrome unrelated to the menstrual cycle are given, features reviewed. No differences found in results obtained follicular luteal phases or pre- post-menopausal patients. reductions...

Oxytetracycline given to two patients with impaired renal function produced clinical deterioration and increasing azotaemia. Both improved when oxytetracycline was stopped. In general tetracycline should not be used in poor function, but if it is necessary the blood urea level checked frequently.

Three patients with insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus are described in whom generalized oedema and weight gain followed the administration of excessive monocomponent insulins, two cases associated symptomatic hypoglycaemia. Serial measurements plasma volume transcapillary escape rate albumin (TERA) using 125 I‐labelled albumin, serum colloid osmotic pressure (COP) a membrane osmometer, packed cell (PCV), proteins, showed that was an increased TERA, while total protein concentration COP...

Six obese subjects were studied over a period of 12 weeks whilst on 1260 kJ (300 kcal) formula diet. Weight loss was initially rapid, but later slowed markedly despite good patient compliance. The basal metabolic rate (BMR) fell in all patients during the study. Plasma triiodothyronine patients, plasma half-life thyroxine increased. thyroxine, reverse (reverse T3) and serum prolactin thyrotropin response to thyroliberin showed no significant change.

Women GDM were characterized by a lower 30-min insulin increment (40.8 [34.9–47.6] vs. 58.6 [53.6–64] pmol insulin/mmol glucose, P < 0.001; geometric mean [95% confidence interval]) higher...

Abstract Species range shifts due to climate alterations have been increasingly well‐documented. Although amphibians are one of the most sensitive groups animals environmental perturbations change, almost no studies offered evidence poleward distribution in this taxon response warming. Range would be facilitated by variation traits associated with ability species persist and/or shift their face but extent and consequences intraspecific these is unclear.
