Abstract This paper reports the chemical evidence of balance between radical molecular ions and protonatedmolecules xanthophylls (an oxygen‐containing carotenoid) with a conjugated π‐system (polyene) oxygen as heteroatom in ESI HRESI mass spectrometry. The ionization energy neutral was calculated by semi‐empirical methods. results were compared those previously published for carotenoids retinoids, which have also been shown ESI‐MS to form M +• [M + H] , respectively. study demonstrates,...

We report here new chemical evidence for the generation of radical molecular ions compounds with a conjugated pi-system (polyene) in ESI and HR-MALDI mass spectrometry. The oxidation potential neutral polyenes was calculated by cyclic-voltammetry results compared those previously published other complex that have also been shown to form M*+ ESI-MS. This study clearly demonstrates correlation between formation studied.
