Advances in biological engineering are likely to have substantial impacts on global society. To explore these potential we ran a horizon scanning exercise capture range of perspectives the opportunities and risks presented by engineering. We first identified 70 issues, then used an iterative process prioritise 20 issues that considered be emerging, impact, relatively unknown outside field The may interest researchers, businesses policy makers sectors such as health, energy, agriculture environment.
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has demonstrated efficacy and is increasingly being used in the treatment of patients with recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. Despite a lack high-quality trials to provide more information on long-term effects FMT, there been great enthusiasm about potential for expanding its applications. However, FMT presents many serious ethical social challenges that must be addressed as part successful regulatory policy response. In this article, we draw...
Horizon scanning is intended to identify the opportunities and threats associated with technological, regulatory social change. In 2017 some of present authors conducted a horizon scan for bioengineering (Wintle et al., 2017). Here we report results new that based on inputs from larger more international group 38 participants. The final list 20 issues includes topics spanning political (the regulation genomic data, increased philanthropic funding malicious uses neurochemicals) environmental...
The fast-paced field of synthetic biology is fundamentally changing the global biosecurity framework. Current regulations and strategies are based on previous governance paradigms for pathogen-oriented security, recombinant DNA research, broader concerns related to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Many scholarly discussions practitioners therefore concerned that outpaces established biosafety measures prevent deliberate malicious or inadvertent accidental misuse biology's processes...
Multiple national and international trends drivers are radically changing what biological security means for the United Kingdom (UK). New technologies present novel opportunities challenges, globalisation has created new pathways increased speed, volume routes by which organisms can spread. The UK Biological Security Strategy (2018) acknowledges importance of research on in UK. Given breadth potential research, a targeted agenda identifying questions most critical to effective coordinated...
Patent systems have been a significant domain in which controversies over socioeconomic and moral implications of novel biotechnologies played out. Politics uses comparative analysis of...
In Brief A year-long orientation was implemented for all newly licensed RNs at a public hospital. Was it success?
Nurse residency programs (NRPs) are an effective mechanism for transitioning newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) to practice. No studies have investigated how experienced view NLRN performance after NRPs. The purpose of this quality initiative was identify nurses' satisfaction with proficiency before and implementation NRP using the Nursing Practice Readiness Tool. Findings indicate that more satisfied NLRNs new nurse participated in NRP.
The book is a collection of the papers presented at Institute for Consideration Blood and Blood-Forming Organs held University Wisconsin, Sept. 4 to 6, 1939. In keeping with stated purpose institute, basic principles newer fundamental scientific aspects hematology are stressed. authors, fifteen in number, all reperesentative leaders their fields. Watson presents recent work on porphyrins, field which has been neglected because technical difficulties involved. Rhoads reports study "all cases...
In its governance activities for genetic resources, the international community has adopted various approaches to their ownership, including: free access; common heritage of mankind; intellectual property rights; and state sovereign rights. They have also created systems which combine elements these approaches. While plant animal resources is well-established internationally, there not yet been a clear approach selected human resources. Based on assessment goals ought serve, implications how...
The study of existential risk — the human extinction or collapse civilization has only recently emerged as an integrated field research, and yet overwhelming volume relevant research already been published. To provide evidence base for policy analysis, this should be systematically reviewed. In a systematic review, one many time-consuming tasks is to read titles abstracts publications, see if they meet inclusion criteria. We show how task can shared between multiple people (using...
International standards have been elaborated for laboratory biosafety and biosecurity in relation to work on both human animal pathogens. Comparing the findings from two official reports (HSE, 2007; Spratt, 2007) regarding 2007 Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak United Kingdom (UK) with these international highlights several areas of deficiency facilities national guidance procedures, suggesting that had fully applied, would not occurred.
In discussions of how to address synthetic biology within the Convention on Biodiversity, concerns have been expressed that is currently unregulated and proceeding with work in area unethical unless a strict precautionary approach applied it. International governance genetic resources extensive, because most inputs into outputs from can be classified as resources, it clear this not an field. Existing rules may, however, need adaptation or guidance their interpretation context some additional...
