We describe the design, construction, and performance of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Telescope located at Apache Point Observatory. The telescope is a modified two-corrector Ritchey-Chretien design which has 2.5-m, f/2.25 primary, 1.08-m secondary, Gascoigne astigmatism corrector, one pair interchangeable highly aspheric correctors near focal plane, for imaging other spectroscopy. final ratio f/5. instrumented by wide-area, multiband CCD camera fiber-fed double spectrographs. Novel features...
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 15 high-redshift quasars (z > 3.6) discovered from ∼140 deg2 five-color (u', g', r', i', z') imaging data taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) during its commissioning phase. The are selected their distinctive colors in SDSS multicolor space. Four have redshifts higher than 4.6 = 4.63, 4.75, 4.90, 5.00, latter being highest redshift quasar yet known). In addition, two previously known z 4 objects were recovered data. all i* <...
This paper describes the discovery of seven dwarf objects spectral type `L' (objects cooler than latest M dwarfs) in commissioning imaging data taken by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Low-resolution spectroscopy shows that these have types from L0 to L8. Comparison SDSS and 2MASS photometry for several indicates presence significant opacity at optical wavelengths, perhaps due atmospheric dust. comparison also demonstrates high astrometric accuracy (better 1'' faint sources) both surveys....
We have studied the photoproduction of $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}$ mesons on H, Be, Fe, and Pb targets using real photons at a mean energy 120 GeV. The ${p}_{T}^{2}$ spectra were used to separate coherent diffractive signals from incoherent signals. Parametrizing per-nucleus cross sections in terms power-law dependences, ${A}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, we find that ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{coh}}=1.40\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$ for...
We present an analysis of the exclusive semileptonic decay mode ${D}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${K}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${e}^{+}$${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$. have measured ratio rates .11(syst), which corresponds to a ${D}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${K}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${e}^{+}$${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ branching fraction (3.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)%. Combining our result with measurement ${D}^{0}$ lifetime, we find...
Inelastic and elastic Jψ photoproduction on hydrogen are investigated at a mean energy of 105 GeV. The inelastic cross section with EψEγ<0.9 is significantly lower than the corresponding result for muoproduction iron targets, but consistent second-order perturbative QCD calculation.Received 9 November 1983DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.52.795©1984 American Physical Society
The decay ${D}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ has been studied in the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691. ratio of branching ratios, $\frac{B({D}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{K}}^{*0}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e})}{B({D}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})}$, is found to be 0.49\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05,...

We measure the differential cross section with respect to Feynman-x (xF) and transverse momentum (PT) for charm meson production using targets of Be, Al, Cu, W. In range 0.1<xF<0.7, dσ/dxF is well fit by form (1-xF)n n=3.9±0.3. The difference between n values D− D+ 1.1±0.7. However, we find an asymmetry 0.18±0.06 favoring compared D+. lower PT range, <2 GeV, dσ/dP2T exp(-b×P2T) b=1.03±0.06 GeV−2, while in higher 0.8 3.6 it exp(-b’×PT) b’=2.76±0.08 GeV−1. shape has no significant dependence...

The D+ lifetime, based on 969 D+→K−π+π+ decays, is measured be (1.06±0.05±0.03)×10−12 s. Using 1360 D0 decays into modes K−π+ and K−π+π−π+, we determine lifetime (0.435±0.015±0.010)×10−12 ratio τ(D+)/τ(D0) obtained from these two measurements 2.44±0.14±0.08.Received 14 October...
Photoproduction of $\ensuremath{\phi}$ mesons from hydrogen and carbon was studied at 5.2 GeV by observing $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decays.
