Cardiac output measured by thermodilution in 25 patients within 24 hours of acute myocardial infarction was compared with cardiac Doppler echocardiography (24 patients) and electrical bioimpedance (25 patients). The mean (range) outputs (4.03 (2.2-6.0) 1/min) (3.79 (1.1-6.2) were similar to the value (3.95 (2.1-6.2) 1/min). Both non-invasive techniques agreed closely most patients. None less, three results each method disagreed more than 1 1/min. reproducible accurate infarction. time...
Twenty two patients with heart failure were studied in a double blind crossover trial to compare amiodarone (200 mg/day) placebo. Each agent was given for three months. Extrasystoles and complex ventricular arrhythmias common during ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring exercise testing at entry the study. Breathlessness tiredness as assessed by visual analogue scores duration of treadmill did not become worse treatment. During placebo phases study left ejection fraction cardiac index...
Approximately 5-10% of patients with hypertension have secondary hypertension. We describe a case from bilateral renal artery stenosis (RAS): "Pickering syndrome." This is to RAS which provides an opportunity review specific focus on RAS, in terms when consider work up, causes hypertension, diagnostic testing, and treatment.
Intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus are a common injury to hindfoot following high-energy trauma lower extremity. Treatment these has evolved. Due concern wound complications associated with extensile open treatment, smaller incision techniques, such as sinus tarsi approach, increasing in popularity. A number fixation strategies utilized this and it is unknown which most accurately restores radiographic alignment. The purpose study was compare postoperative outcomes plate screw...
Young heterogenous bovine tendons preserved in homologous plasma and irradiated, frozen, fetal transplanted dogs cause reactions which differ only slightly from those associated with autogenous-tendon transplants dogs. All underwent necrosis but acted as struts, were replaced by tenoblasts the stumps of host. See Images PDF File
Three deaths from dissection of the aorta in a series 157 adult women with Turner9s syndrome are reported. These greatly excess numbers expected. None three patients had coarctation aorta. One aortic regurgitation but there was no reason to believe that other two been subjected unusual haemodynamic stresses. Cystic medial necrosis described on whom necropsies were carried out. It is concluded probably increased risk even absence any abnormality and valve. Previously reported cases discussed.
The lymphatic system plays important roles in protein and solute transport as well the immune system. Its functionality is vital to proper homeostasis fluid balance. Lymph may be propelled by intrinsic (active) vessel pumping or passive compression from external tissue movement. With regard former, nitric oxide (NO) known play an role modulating contraction vasodilation. Lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) are sensitive shear, increases flow have been shown cause enhanced production of NO...
In response to "Aspirin and Reye Syndrome" by the Committee on Infectious Diseases of American Academy Pediatrics (p 810), we offer comments which are restricted our analysis existing epidemiologic study data, portions were provided us Ohio, Michigan, Arizona investigators. This commentary should not be construed as approval or disapproval aspirin use in children. Rather, it summarizes specific disagreements with interpretation state data that basis report Diseases. We have found an...
Summary A Weber type C ankle fracture was sequentially reproduced in 12 cadaver lower extremities and an external rotation torque applied at each interval. The fractures were then repaired staged fashion the rotational stability of mortise evaluated. Maximum talus within averaged 7.7° intact increased by 311% to 31.8° after creation a injury. Rigid fixation fibular restored 32% stability, whereas isolated medial malleolus reconstituted 57%. Fibular combined with syndesmotic screw 51%...
Abstract Following the report of ten cases respiratory illness in processors frozen king crab, we investigated conditions work and pulmonary immunologic status workers three crab‐processing one fish‐packing (control) plant. Pulmonary function was measured before after work, skin tests were performed subgroups matched for age, sex, duration current employment. The antibody response to crab antigens examined sera from another (unrelated) control group. Extracts meat, shell, processing dust...
The secondary lymphatic valve is a bi-leaflet structure frequent throughout collecting vessels that serves to prevent retrograde flow of lymph. Despite its vital function in lymph and apparent importance disease development, the associated fluid dynamics have been largely understudied. goal this work was construct physiologically relevant computational model an idealized rat mesenteric using fully coupled fluid-structure interactions investigate relationship between three-dimensional...
SCINCE its introduction by Daniels1 in 1949 the technic of prescalene-lymph-node biopsy has gained favor as a means studying intrathoracic disease. The simplicity method permitted application patients whose clinical condition is poor. However, questions have arisen regarding both diagnostic value and prognostic significance. purpose this report to review 153 consecutive biopsies from these aspects. An attempt been made not only determine frequency positive diagnoses established procedure but...
The effects of a 30 week exercise programme on serum lipid values, blood pressure, and cardiac function were assessed in group sedentary men aged 35-50 training for their first marathon. Mean cholesterol concentration (n = 33) fell by 12% from 6.54 (SE 0.18) to 5.76 (0.15) mmol/l (mean fall 0.78 mmol/l; 95% confidence interval 0.52 1.04 mmol/l), triglyceride 22% 1.56 (0.17) 1.21 (0.09) 0.34 0.12 0.56 mean pressure 27) 10% 102 (2) 92 mm Hg 10 Hg; 7 13 Hg). These changes not explained body...
A further study of the electrocardiogram in patients with sex chromosome abnormalities who have no evidence heart disease is described. It confirmed that 47, XYY males atrioventricular conduction delayed and 45, X females it accelerated. In there also a higher than normal frequency minor defects intraventricular conduction. No significant deviation from was found men XXY karyotype or XXX women. The significance finding discussed.
Time course studies of rho-nitroanisole O-demethylation revealed formaldehyde production in excess rho-nitrophenol (PNP) and 4-nitrocatechol (NTC) formation by rat liver microsomes. This indicated that these products (PNP, NTC) were metabolised further. The hydroxylation reaction PNP yields NTC showed substrate product inhibition a requirement for reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate O2 was localized It strongly activated ascorbic acid, cysteine, adenosine triphosphate or...
