Abstract Bacterial pigments of the aryl polyene type are structurally similar to well‐known carotenoids with respect their systems. Their biosynthetic gene cluster is widespread in taxonomically distant bacteria, and four classes such have been found. Here we report structure elucidation polyene/dialkylresorcinol hybrid Variovorax paradoxus B4 by HPLC‐UV‐MS, MALDI‐MS NMR. Furthermore, show for first time that this pigment class protects bacterium from reactive oxygen species, similarly what...
The natural pigment astaxanthin has attracted much attention because of its beneficial effects on human health, despite expensive market price. In order to produce astaxanthin, transgenic plants have so far been generated through conventional genetic engineering Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer. results trials revealed that the method is from practicable low yields, i.e. instead large quantities intermediates, including ketocarotenoids, accumulated in plants. present study, we overcome...
We previously demonstrated that cinnamon extract (CE) ameliorates type 1 diabetes induced by streptozotocin in rats through the up-regulation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) translocation both muscle and adipose tissues. This present study was aimed at clarifying detailed mechanism(s) with which CE increases uptake vivo cell culture systems using 3T3-L1 adipocytes C2C12 myotubes vitro. Specific inhibitors key enzymes insulin signaling AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways, as well...
Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. (Nymphaceae) has been used for various medicinal purposes as in Chinese herbal medicine. In particular, the leaves are known diuretic and astringent properties, to treat obesity. During our search a plant-derived anti-obesity agent from natural products, we have found that 50% ethanol (EtOH) extract prepared of N. (NN) stimulated lipolysis white adipose tissue (WAT) mice beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR) pathway was involved this effect. subsequent experiments,...
α-Acids and β-acids, two main components of hop resin, are known to be susceptible oxygen degraded during storage, although the oxidation products in stored hops have not been fully identified. In this study, we developed a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis method suitable for separation quantification products. This HPLC clearly proved, first time, that humulinones hulupones major oxidized hops. We also identify novel 4'-hydroxy-allohumulinones, suggested oxidative...
ABSTRACT Cycloclasticus sp. strain A5 is able to grow with petroleum polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including unsubstituted and substituted naphthalenes, dibenzothiophenes, phenanthrenes, fluorenes. A set of genes responsible for the degradation PAHs was isolated by using ability organism oxidize indole indigo. This 10.5-kb DNA fragment sequenced found contain 10 open reading frames (ORFs). Seven ORFs showed homology previously characterized PAH were designated phn genes, although...
ABSTRACT A carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster mediating the production of 2-hydroxyastaxanthin was isolated from marine bacterium Brevundimonas sp. strain SD212 by using a common crtI sequence as probe DNA. analysis revealed this to contain 12 open reading frames (ORFs), including 7 known genes, crtW , crtY crtB crtE idi and crtZ . The individual ORFs were functionally analyzed complementation studies Escherichia coli that accumulated various precursors due presence other bacterial crt...
We identified two compounds that demonstrated 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity from cultures of Lactobacillus plantarum. Spectroscopic analyses proved these to be L-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) lactic acid (HPLA) and L-indole-3-lactic (ILA). The respective EC50 values for HPLA ILA were 36.6 ± 4.3 mM 13.4 1.0 mM.
The human intestinal microbiota that comprise over 1,000 species thrive in dark and anaerobic environments. They are recognized for the production of diverse low-molecular-weight metabolites crucial to health diseases. Carotenoids, pigments known their antioxidative activity, delivered humans through oral intake. However, it remains unclear whether bacteria biosynthesize carotenoids as part in-situ microbiota. In this study, we investigated carotenoid synthesis genes various gut probiotic...
The petals of flowering plants should retain unique antioxidants that have not been found in the fruits, as need to stay open attract pollinators against photooxidation and devise a solution avoid eating attacks. We reported yellow freesia cultivars (Freesia x hybrida) accumulated original apocarotenoids, mono- di-neapolitanosyl crocetin. Here, petals, we discovered eight novel flavonoids by their structural determination, including four 3′-caffeoylquercetin 3,7-glycosides, one 3-glycoside,...
Inhibition of dephosphorylation the 20 kDa myosin light chain (MLC ) is an important mechanism for Ca 2+ ‐induced sensitization vascular smooth muscle contraction. We investigated whether this operates in prostaglandin F 2α (PGF )‐induced contraction rabbit aortic and, if so, protein kinase C (PKC) or rho‐associated (rho kinase) contribute to inhibition dephosphorylation. In normal medium, PGF (10 μ m increased phosphorylation MLC and developed tension. The rho‐kinase inhibitors fasudil...

PURPOSE
We hypothesized that antibiotic overuse for acute cough illness (ACI) is in part due to a mismatch between patients' expectations and the natural history of ACI.
METHODS
performed population-based random digit dialing survey 493 adults Georgia determine their regarding duration also systematic review observational studies placebo or untreated control groups randomized controlled trials ACI from published medical literature. included otherwise healthy with...
It has been reported that the acidity of gastric contents could be an important factor in regulating jejunal flora. To investigate effects omeprazole induced changes pH on flora and bile acid metabolism.Twenty one patients with ulcer 19 healthy volunteers were studied. Deconjugation acids was detected using a breath test. Jejunal fluid aspirated double lumen tube rubber cover tip deconjugation examined thin layer chromatography. Fat malabsorption by triolein test.In test, expired samples from...
The rhizome of Boesenbergia pandurata Schult. was found to possess potent antioxidant activity in a rat brain homogenate model. Bioassay-guided isolation the active compounds from CH2Cl2-MeOH (1:1) extract led 5-hydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone, panduratin A, 5,7-dihydroxyflavanone, 2',6'-dihydroxy-4'-methoxychalcone, 2',4'-dihydroxy-6'-methoxychalcone, and 4-hydroxypanduratin A. Panduratin 2',6'-dihydroxy-4'-methoxychalcone were also exert neuroprotective effects.
Anti-oxidative, anti-tumor-promoting, and anti-carcinogenic activities of adonirubin adonixanthin, which are biosynthetic intermediates from β-carotene to astaxanthin, were investigated. Both adonixanthin showed almost the same for inhibition lipid peroxidation quenching singlet oxygen as those astaxanthin. Furthermore, exhibited an inhibitory effect on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen activation in Raji cells carcinogensis mouse skin tumors initiated by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene...
