Allyl sulfides are characteristic flavor components obtained from garlic. These thought to be responsible for their epidemiologically proven anticancer effect on garlic eaters. This study was aimed at clarifying the molecular basis of this by using human colon cancer cell lines HCT-15 and DLD-1. The growth cells significantly suppressed diallyl trisulfide (DATS, IC50 = 11.5 microM, DLD-1 13.3 microM); however, neither monosulfide nor disulfide showed such an effect. proportion that residing...

This study verifies the instability of garlic (Allium sativum L.)-derived allyl 2-propenylthiosulfinate (allicin) in various aqueous and ethanolic solutions as well vegetable oil through chemical biological analyses performed simultaneously. Crushed fresh cloves generated antibacterial activity chemically detectable allicin, a major principle, both declined on daily basis at room temperature, showing half-lives about 6 11 days, respectively. Allicin was more stable 20% alcohol than water,...

Allicin (allyl 2-propenethiosulfinate), an antibacterial principle of garlic, has drawn much attention, since it potent antimicrobial activity against a range microorganisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. There have been many reports on the properties allicin, but no quantitative comparison activities between freshly prepared garlic extract and clinically useful antibiotics performed. To verify substantial effect aqueous extract, we compared with those allicin...

Effects of pre-germinated brown rice (PGBR) on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were studied. The feeding a PGBR diet to ameliorated the elevation blood glucose and PAI-1 concentrations significantly, tended decrease plasma lipid peroxide in comparison with fed white diet. These results suggest that intake instead is effective for prevention vascular complications.

It has long been believed that an intake of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) alleviates diabetic pathological conditions. However, it is still controversial whether the beneficial effect insulin-dependent or insulin-mimetic. This study was aimed at determining insulin-independent cinnamon. Streptozotocin-induced rats were divided into four groups and orally administered with aqueous extract (CE) for 22 d. The had taken CE a dose more than 30 mg/kg/d rescued from their hyperglycemia...

The garlic-derived antibacterial principle, alk(en)yl sulfinate compounds, has long been considered as very short-lived substance. However, there are some data showing a rather more stable nature of allicin. We determined here the thermostability allicin by systematic analyses employing chemical quantification and an activity assay. Allicin in aqueous extract garlic was degraded stoichiometrically proportion to temperature; we estimated half-life be about year at 4 °C (from 1.8 mg/ml 0.9...

Alk(en)yl trisulfides (R-SSS-R′) are organosulfur compounds produced by crushed garlic and other Allium vegetables. We found that these exhibit potent anticancer effects through the reaction with microtubules, causing cell cycle arrest. Nine alk(en)yl including dimethyl trisulfide, diethyl dipropyl trisulfide (DPTS), dibutyl dipentyl diallyl (DATS), dibutenyl dipentenyl allyl methyl were synthesized added to cultures of HT-29 human colon cancer cells at a concentration 10 μM.
